Canon mv630i - dead CCD?

Options
Hope someone can help, this has stumped me, and don't know what the problem is, or what an indicative cost of repair might be.

Above camcorder, bought 2/3yrs ago, worked beautifully, for ever and ever, amen. Captured some 'first baby' footage one day, and the next day, I only get a black screen with red lines/interference!

it plays back previous recordings, so the little LCD screen is OK. It records audio fine, but just can't an image to record (apart from the black with red lines!!)
I wondered if it might be the light sensor/ccd thingy (that I don't understand)?
Is that logical?
if so, can it be replaced, and if so, is there anyone in the know that could suggest a price. I don't want to send it off for a diagnosis only to be charged £50 for a 'not mendable, it's more than a x weeks old - buy a new one like veryone else, and throw it in a landfill!!' (which is what was suggested to me over a cd player not so long ago - except for the land fill bit, that was me going over the top, I know my WEEE guidelines!!)

Any thoughts?

There was a problem with CCD's in canon camcorders made a few years back.

Give them a ring & ask them. I got mine repaired free, I just sent it in & it came back within a couple of weeks fixed.

If only I could press the Thanks button, multiple times!

Our camcorder was sent off, to Plymcare, and received back within 72 hours, fixed for free. It was indeed a faulty ccd.

So many thanks Rawy, we thought we were destined to buy a replacement, expecting a faulty repair. Another few pounds in my pocket, thanks for the combined knowledge of money saving experts!

    Hi,

I had a similar experience with an elderly Canon Powershot stills digital camera that was affected by this bad batch of sensors.

The sensor was replaced rapidly, and without a quibble.

This is just one of the reasons why I would always buy Canon cameras, I also think their optical qualities are pretty dammed good too.

    Regards,

    White
  • I had the same problem and got my Canon MV600 fixed with Plymcare, but now it has a problem with the tape loading mechanism. When I put a tape in it makes a loud whirring noise and will not take it in. I think this is a very common problem, anyone had this before or have any ideas?

I have got the same problem with my 630i, 3 years old in a couple of weeks.
I found this thread whilst searching for someone to repair it as Jessops have a fixed price of £196.95!
Rang Plymcare - the webiste is a Co-Op though!), and its in tomorrows post!
    Excellent!, Many, many thanks!!
  • Do you mean that you got it fixed for free?
  • Thats what I have been told. Just costs the postage for special delivery. I will let all know when I get it back etc.
  • I was starting to think 'this is too good to be true' but it came back on the 19th - less than a week later. Fixed for free.
All thanks to finding a link to this thread on Google!!

Now that's a bit of moneysaving eh?
I guess you may now be a convert! I have saved loads of money from this site, nothing obsessive, just forum advice, mortgage calculators, decent credit card deals, searching for good car/house insurance. Welcome!
