Hi,
My sister received a letter from HSBC Accounts review team today. HSBC will be closing my sisters Credit Card and Current Account in next 30 days.
They have removed the overdraft facility to 0 and the credit limit has been reduced to £1400 from £4000. She has 1k balance on the card at the moment.
Has anyone else received a similar letter from HSBC?

Has she claimed excessive charges back recently?0

It'll be interesting if the response is 'no'. It will be a pointer to banks taking pre-emptive action to avoid clamourous shouts of 'vindictive'. Let's face it in any future downturn badly run and therefore in the banks' unprofitable accounts will be spurned. My belief is that people who have has the account closed by their bank will find it more difficult to find another with bells and whistles, and that potential new customers by transfer will find the process more rigorous, such things as statements being required.
I'm sure bank staff will soon reacquire a nose for spotting the weong-un.0 -

I already have one. I can tell a wrong 'un within 5 minutes of meeting them!0 -
Interesting points from Oldwiring and Crabman - at some point the banks are going to be copped by the OFT, maybe they are reducing their exposure to this?
I'm sure they'd have to pay up even on closed accounts, but by stopping further charges now they can draw a line under their known liabilities. Having said that, if I ran a bank I'd continue charging and put the excess in another bank to rack up some interest...0 -
Just as like ly to so ot by investing what they do not needto coverthe required portion of their lending and maintenace of liquidity ratios . Short term it was done in my day by buying and selling things like treasury bills, and there were people deciding moment by moment whether to buy or sell. Banks that are short will also boeeow from their colleagues. There are also long term investments. As to HSBC it has to be considered that it is part of a global group and the impact pf the OFT ruling, when delivered, may well be viewed in that wider context.
Here is a link to the balance sheet of the global company.

This is not aimed at the OP unless her sister had excessive bank charges, BUT:
If I was a bank who'd offered someone a significant overdraft limit, decent credit card with a high limit etc, all free of charge and they turned around and started threating legal action on me because they had been inflicted with charges which are clearly laid out in the T&C's of bank accounts for not managing their account properly then I would take away or reduce these facilities on their account because they obviously don't deserve them.
The banks should force people who go unauthorised overdrawn twice or more in 6 months to have basic accounts. No overdraft, no cheque guarantee or visa/maestro card. People who do overdraw regularly aren't usually making 'genunie mistakes'. It makes you wonder how many people are in tescos today doing their shopping thinking 'well i don't really have enough in my account to buy the shopping but i'll pay on my card anyway, if I get charged i'll just claim it back'.
I agree that in some cases the charges are excessive, but most people claiming the fees back expect everything back when they are the ones at fault. Not the bank. So there are now effectively no penalties in place for people who are bad at managing credit. What do the banks do in response?, put interest rates up on EVERYBODY's credit cards and overdrafts so that we all suffer.0 -

No charges were claimed. She never had charges such as bounced cheques or Direct Debits. HSBC Credit Cards payments were done via DD through her HSBC Bank Account.
I have seen here bank statements and I don't see any problems with her account. I have asked her to write to HSBC Review team and if the decision is still no make a complaint.

Has she a common name- and thus she has been wrongly identified? It can happen0
