Number stolen by BT

I am a "resting" Utility Warehouse distributor but I still help customers when they have problems. A customer (also a friend) who pays line rental to UW called yesterday to say that her landline had been disconnected by BT and her line and number had been reallocated to a person who lives down the road. Apparently the other person's line had technical difficulties and it won't be fixed until Sept 26th. BT have refused to talk to my friend because she is not a customer of theirs. She has informed UW who are trying to resolve the matter with BT. I intend to complain to OFCOM , surely its not right that BT can just cut off a person who is not their customer and re-allocate the number.

Is this what the Utility Warehouse people have told her? Have you tried ringing the number and seeing if that lady down the road picks up?Comping wins this month: 2 x business class flights anywhere we like | Horse vitamins (!) | New kettle | Motorcycling prints | Signed LPs | Thanks to all!0

It's what she told me and yes I have called the number and the lady down the road is getting fed up with my friends friends calling her and having to explain why she is answering my friends phone.0

How do you know its not the fault of the Utility Warehouse that this has occurred? Have you spoken to your customer service department about the matter.
The reason i ask is my other half, use to use UW,and they managed together with the people that route their calls Opal Telecom (part of the Carphone Warehouse Group) to get her number cut off .As a result of the poor customer service she received from them she moved her business elsewhere.0 -
UW do not have access to the equipment where the line switch was made. BT are sub-contacted to UW in all maintenance and repair of lines. I have not spoken to UW yet but intend to do so first thing tommorrow.0

Surely Openreach a company kept at arms length from BT provides, maintains and repairs the lines on behalf of UW.0

If this customer is also your friend you should be ashamed for getting them to sign up with the utility warehouse (which is another trading name for telecom plus).
They can't use 1899, primus etc, have to pay a membership fee on top of the line rental and have to pay a minimum charge each month if they don't use the phone much.
Their charges aren't competitive and the advice of MSE Martin:Telecom Plus’s home phone service especially should be avoided as it is uncompetitive.
Best thing is that now their line has been cut off, they should be able to get out of the uw contract and can get a better cheaper more reliable service elsewhere without having to contact their tired (resting) "friend" when they have a problem.
(Does a "resting" distributor still receive a cut of all their "friends" payments to uw whilst they take the no doubt well earned rest?)
It seems very questionable (and maybe libellous) to post on here that BT have "stolen" something without any hard facts.0 -
Actually Quentin they were fed up with their existing suppliers and I have saved them a lot of money. They may have been able to save more elsewhere but they are too busy to be "moneysavers" and they like getting all their utilities and mobiles on one bill. The hard facts are those that I have stated, If you like I will give you the phone number of the lady who now has the "stolen" number and you can check it out yourself. I am aware of the laws of libel but for your information a statement is not usually considered to be libellous if it is true.0

Thats right hurrah.
Having being part of the same company until quite recently Openreach no doubt have a much closer working relationship with the part of BT that you pay your line rental to and report faults to than other companies like UW.
I wonder if this incident would have happened at all or would have taken so long to resolve if line rental was still with BT?0 -
UW say that in the event of a line fault it will be repaired by BT. The simple fact is my friend, a UW customer, can no longer use her phone or internet and a neighbour, a BT customer, has been given her line and number. Surely this can't be right or fair whether you like UW or not.0

Right or Fair its a shame that before you made the original post, you did not check with the Customer Service Department of the outfit you represent, to establish both sides of the story (the full facts).
I am an ex-customer of T-Plus and my observation above would apply whether i liked the service or not.0
