How do you people get motivated?

My house is a state at the moment, I have friends coming round on Friday so I thought that would motivate me but still I sit here just looking at the mess and feeling totally drained of energy and motivation!

I've been reading the flylady site and also threads on here to try and get my motivation going but to no avail!!

I just can't seem to find the energy to run around doing it, I did do a little bit last night but after 10 minutes I'd had enough, I'm a little stressed with a few things going on at home at the moment so I think that's wearing me down but I do need to get things done so how do you get motivated and energised? I will keep trying to do baby steps!

Another thing, I have a corner in my bedroom which is my clutter corner, I want to start decluttering that but I have a fear of spiders and I know that there's got to be at least one waiting for me to move the stuff so I think that puts me off too, anyone else have this problem? I always wear rubber gloves and carry my hoover around when tidying so I can suck the little critters up (sorry to any arachnid lovers) but then that shakes me up so I lose all motivation in carrying on! I'm a hopeless cause really aren't I?! :o

Anyway sorry for the long whining post but at least I've put off the cleaning for a bit longer whilst typing this!! :rotfl:

I just get on with it and reward myself with 15 minutes computer time (read MSE for that).

This morning I feel like poo! I have no energy and every task seems to take twice as long. All I want to do is lie down and sleep but I am literally forcing myself to keep going, what happened was I started one task, that task led into another and another until the downstairs is almost clean and sorted. I still have the dining room to do as that is going to be a huge job but at least I know that I'm accomplishing something. Sometimes you just have to force yourself to get over that mental block and at least get the job started.

I motivate myself by posting on here!!! Although nobody knows me, i find by telling complete strangers (although i do now feel i know a lot of people on here) that im going to dust and hoover and make flapjacks, gives me an incentive to actually do it!!! Prob sounds really strange, but for me it works as i think if ive posted that i will do it, i really need to as thats what people think im going to do!!!!
  • I know what you mean Kate, for me it's a case of "I'll get to that tomorrow" but we all know the old saying- tomorrow never comes:confused:

Sorry I can't help, seem to be a bit in the same predicament:o

Maybe if you make a small list tonight, then lay out your work around the house clothes ready to jump straight into when you get up might help?

It isn't easy somtimes, but reading on here really gets you going, for example I made Chutney and soup with my glut of Tomatoes this weekend.

Beleive me thats major cooking for me, I once took a photo of a cake I'd made as it was such an event :o :rotfl:

I'm even freezing leftovers as well  which is normally a complete nono as I'm such a wuss about food safety :D mind you I've never been ill from dodgy food either so maybe these a method in my madness.

I'm not scared of spiders but I am of slugs and snails and we have an allotment, trust me they are massive down there, I think they come there for their dinner :rotfl: I get OH to move them :rotfl:

Maybe do one thing at a time, with a promise of a coffee and biccy or whatever takes your fancy after  ;) and another play on the internet.

    Best of luck.

I know exactly what you mean and you are not whining. Housework is one of the most boring jobs on this planet. sometimes, I feel motivated, other times I could quite happily walk away from it.

How long are you giving yourself to do the pesky jobs?

If you feel you can only cope with 10 minutes at a time, then try giving yourself 10 minute jobs, taking a short break, then do another 10 minutes.

If you feel you want to extend it to 15, 20 minutes etc, then do. You are feeling pressured to do it all now! Break the job into smaller, even more manageable steps.

Are your friends going to look at every corner of your house? Why not concentrate on the areas they will actually see and leave the rest.

Regarding the spiders, there maybe one, there maybe several, there maybe none. If you feel shaken by seeing one, then sit down and wait, then start again when you have calmed down. You are equipped with your gloves and vacuum!

Do you live alone or have a family? I often feel angry that my family members mess up a place and it is left to me clear up. The anger makes me feel demotivated, so wonder if that is a factor in how you feel?

Thank you for your quick replies! I shall finish off my cup of tea and then I'm trotting off upstairs to sort out the bathroom (smallest room:rotfl: ) I shall probably be back on here 10 minutes later moaning again!!

Thanks again! Josiegirl I hope you find some motivation soon!

Hugs to you all, you're all inspiring!

Kate, it may be the smallest room, but you'll feel better that one room's done and you may find it motivates you to get more done. :grouphug:

That's true, I may just do the bits that are on view for now, I always feel like I'm being judged when they come round though as they have immaculate houses!! :o

It's just me, my DS, dog, guinea pigs and fish in the house although sometimes it looks as though there are 50 people living here!! :o My DS is 11 and at the 'not bothered if my room is a tip' stage so I may just shut his door and leave him to live in chaos and stinky sock hell!!

I think another thing that's getting to me is the dog hairs, I have a jack russell x breed so he likes to shed everywhere and they sort of weave themselves into the carpet so I need to brush before hoovering (my hoover may be good for incy wincy but dog hairs are a no no) I think I may start saving for a hoover that is fab at picking up hairs!

Anyway thanks again for your replies, I'm off to do my bathroom now!

Your friends probably killed themselves getting the house perfect for your and other people visiting them, they probably feel the same way as you. There seems to be this competition for women to have perfect houses to show when people come round.

Boys, have messy rooms. I say I will pay extra pocket money if he cleans it. My son's room is tidy just now.

I used to have a white cat and a brown carpet!
