US carrier Delta has a new route between London Gatwick and New York-Kennedy, and it’s offering return fares for a bargainous £160 inc taxes and charges. This has sparked a price war with other airlines matching it, and some websites reducing the price futher.
The Details
The original offer is not specifically detailed on the Delta website (though it is contained in this press release) but I've spoken to it and it's confirmed the deal is on. The main price competition comes from Continental airlines, which is doing a specific price match (ie it is selling flights at the same price).
Also as an outside option Virgin offers a general price match policy (ie try and ask it to give you the same price, its not guaranteed but some MoneySavers have succeeded)
When does it fly?
The Delta flights (Continental is roughly similar but goes to NEWARK instead) that qualify must be
A. Between November 15, 2006 to March 21, 2007.
B. It MUST include a Sat night
C. All travel must be completed by April 20, 2007.
D. The offer excludes travel between 15 December to 7 January.
E. The maximum stay is 30 days
F. Remember it is strictly only Gatwick to New York JFK If you find a flight date that works, please post it below to help others
Availabilty Update 12/9/06. Lots of people have booked flights so seats are very limited now. January seems to have reasonable availability, so it's the best time to try if you don't have a spcific date, just want a cheap trip. Dates around the weekend are more scarce than midweek, and its doubtful you'll get any around the St. Patricks weekend in March.
How to find (but not book - see below) a £160 flight
Delta. Remember to search specifically from Gatwick to JFK. Simply go to Delta and put in your dates and cross your fingers (remember it MUST include a Sat night). Plus, thanks to MoneySaver Blindman for pointing out that if you're struggling, use this more detailed search and search 'by schedule' just look for Delta 1 and Delta 2 in the schedule for the cheap flights.
Continental. Follow the same route as above and search here
IMPORTANT. Don't book direct, there's a way to further reduce the price.
Until the 8 September flight site Opodo is giving £20 off for international flights, so once you've found your flight, put the dates in Opodo to see if you can find the specific flight and thus reduce the price down even further! To do this go to Opodo* and you should see a note about the discount in the right of the screen. Of course if you can't find the flight on Opodo, just go back and book direct.
What to do if you can't find a flight
First of all try other available dates, the flights are there, you have to do some searching though. If that doesn't work then it seems online flight broker Ebookers* has a wider range of flights, though they cost £11 more. So it's worth trying there too as a back-up.
What about for those not in the South East of England?
This is a specific promo for Delta's new route, so it's not available elsewhere. Normally I wouldn't include a specific deal so prominently in the weekly e-mail, yet the price is so good I thought it merits it.
Even with a connecting flight or train, for those a good distance away (eg Easyjet from Glasgow, Virgin trains from Manchester) the total price is likely to be cheaper than going to a more local airport.
Good luck and 'have a nice day...'
Martin

Back to the original post....
This is a bargain - cheapest I have ever seen New York city flights for!
No catch - Delta recently got approval for a new route London Gatwick - New York JFK & start on the 15th November. To fill seats and gain awareness they are selling off the economy seats at a bargain £120 + £40 taxes. Plenty of availability right through winter and spring.
Book at www.delta.com - if the fares arent showing up use the "full search option"
Enjoy!

Thanks for this - I am very interested but cannot find anything about this on the delta web site, cant find the full search option either, I am obviously missing something big time, what am I doing wrong?
thanks very much for your help, it was the 'spring' bit that got me excited! We are hoping to go either early April or right at the end of May but fares don't seem that low for that period yet. I am looking like mad for cheapest flights possible, guess I'll just have to keep lookin!
I think you need to book by Sept 7th but you can go till the end of March, with the usual Christmas exclusions. What confuses me is the return flight on the Delta site is 7am but travelsupermarket has a return at 7pm, with Delta, similar fares.
Just a shame its Delta on cramped 757 aircraft. The direct service doesn't start till November so I'd wait for the other airlines to weigh in with their New York offers (usually mid-September time)
On previous form, British Airways and American usually have some excellent deals around this time. I paid £181 return on BA all in - and its well worth the £20 premium.

The direct flight leaves 7.05pm, arrives 7.25am the next day. There is an approx 7am departure which sometimes comes up, which is c onnection through Atlanta rather than a direct flight.

Eh? Yes it is Delta, but the aircraft is a 767-300. The seat pitch is 31", same as the other airlines flying to JFK according to Seatguru so can't see that it's any more cramped than anybody else.
i've just booked mine for march. i need flights from glasgow. ba are the only ones who go to lgw at the right time £66 return. do you think i should book these or is there any chance they might get cheaper. do ba have domestic flight sales? thanks for the tip coral.

Virgin will price match? How do you get them to do that?
You just ring them up, say you've been quoted x amount, waffle on about how you love Virgin, remind them you're a flying club member (if you are that is!) and ask if they'll match it. They'll normally ask for proof of your quote (screenshot of an internet booking, or an emailed itinery).
Personally, I prefer Virgin, so will always see if they'll price match other operators. It's a no lose for us anyway, either we get a cheap flight with Delta, or Virgin...... and if you dont ask, you dont get!

Nice one! I'm only a red card holder so don't think I've got much clout but hey - it's worth a try!

I don't think they will get any cheaper. BTW Are you going to fly to LGW the day before?
