Any ideas on how to clean an old toilet

My daughter has just moved in to old house and her toilet needs a spring clean. The bottom of the pan is black, we have tried bleach but this is not working. Does any one have any ideas please?

Get the rubber gloves on, empty as much water as possible and attack it with a pumice stone.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

    Hi ann,

There are quite a few threads on cleaning toilets. I've listed some of them below for you. Some of the suggestions work for some and not for others. If you have a read at the threads you should find something that will sort out your daughters loo.

    Stained Toilet Bowl

    Toilet !!

    Lime scale in loo's

    Clean Toilet

    Coca cola not worked!!!!!

    TEA BAG CLEANING for toilets

  • I like the pumice stone idea! I emptied our toilet and attacked it with a chisel! It worked !
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

P-W, do you have these bookmarked! ;)

    Al Mac,

    Of course I do, don't you? ;):p
  • I always drop a denture tablet down the toilet overnight - seems to work although I do feel a tad embarrased buying them in the first place!
It's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

Be careful if attacking innocent loos with chisels!!!! Seriously, you can remove the shine (if, of course, there is any left to remove!) which will make the toilet get dirty quicker in the future.)

Vinegar dissolves limescale, so if you push out the water with a loo brush & replace it with vinegar & leave overnight that should help. Assuming you can leave the loo unused overnight (I know that would be a bit of a problem for me! wouldn't remember to go all the way downstairs!)

I had the same problem when I moved into OH's house. After trying every loo cleaning product I ended up buying the Oust Descaler sachets for kettles and irons. Poured a kettle full of boiling water down the loo and emptied 2 sachets into the bowl. Left it overnight and flushed in the morning - no scrubbing required!!
  • I've used this. You can get it from B&Q or somewhere similar. Follow the instruction carefully as you may get a nasty reactions fumes , splash back if not. It costs about £4 and will remove everything if left long enough. It can also be used to brighten up old tiles and grout.

Please wear gloves and goggles when using it though, its very corrosive, but not to china.:T

  • Hello - As I said on the other thread - TESCO TOILET LIMESCALE REMOVER is excellent. My sister had exactly the same problem with her loo when she moved. I suggested this time and time again to her and she grudgingly tried it just prior to going to get a new loo. (interestingly she had got a plumber round who said nothing could be done with her loo!!!)... result one sparkling clean loo!!!!
I know it is a chemical, but it only costs about 70 pence and you will only need to use it once if you get ALL the water out of the toilet first and leave it as long as possible (overnight is best). Once your daughters loo is clean she can use any OS cleaners she chooses - teabags, denture tablets or whatever. I really recommend this stuff as it is quick to do (apart from the wait) and so easy ..... why spend hours with a pumice stone if you don't have to. Good Luck to your daughter with this.
(ps -No- I don't work for Tesco's - in fact I don't even like them much but this stuff is great)

    Quite keen moneysaver......
