Hit pot hole and burst tyre

On the way back from the mothers house tonight, I was doing 40 and hit a pot hole. The car then started pulling to the left.
It has burst my brand new Continental Sport 3 tyre that has literally only done 400 mile!

I'm gutted!

I have a feeling it's knocked the tracking.

Now I know the recent weather we have been having hasn't done much for the roads and I guess potholes are to be expected but this is proper big!

Does anyone reckon I will have a good case to make a claim for cost of new tyre and sort me tracking?
I took pictures tonight in case it gets filled in which would be sods law. Will take some pics tomorrow day time tomorrow too.

Help-Anyone had any experience in this sort of thing :(

google it - iirc you need much better pics with reference objects in the hole to validate how deep it actually is.

Given the recent severe weather and the huge amount of damage its done to the road network it'll probably come down to whether the local authority responsible is acting unreasonable not to have repaired the road. Under normal circumstances you could have a case but as local councils are currently working flat out to make repairs at the moment you may struggle.

When I had a new tyre fitted, they told me it was guaranteed for life, so if I got a puncture they'd replace it. It might be worth digging out your receipt to see if there was any similar guarantee on yours... mine was done at Nationwide I think... but I'm sure a lot would have similar marketing gimmicks.

There's probably some sort of small print about pot holes?! :)

I'd agree, considering the circumstances with the weather causing problems (my driveway is bad!), difficulty repairing in these conditions and volume it might be worth a try but might not get anywhere. Of course it is a catch 22- the more councils pay out the less they can spend on doing the road repairs! Nobody wins!

Tyres damaged by criminal or malicious action, vandalism, improper use, fire, theft, use in competitive sport, road accidents, repair by another garage, mechanical defect of the vehicle, driving on incorrect pressure or a deflated or punctured tyre are specifically excluded from cover under this Guarantee.

I guess they could argue a pothole comes under a road accident.

Yeah, and I appreciate the council will be working flat out to repair. Thh hole is on a main route between 2 towns. Busses are going up and down there frequently which obviously hasn't help.

There has been new houses going up on the road and not so long ago, there was roadworks all along the road plumbing in new utilities.

The shape of the hole and surrounding it is square. It looks it has happened where there has been a previous repair.

I will be taking more shots in the day light today and have my tape measure, I will also use an object to make comparisments too.

If it was a little minor road this happened on I would appreciate the council will be less likely to pay out.
I'm not trying to screw anyone here, just gutted that a main road has been left like that, surely someone must of called them prior to me hitting it.
The cost of the tyre that blew out was £110, I don't have the receipt as I shredded it  Hopefully I can get a copy of it. Then it will just be a case of sorting the tracking and getting garage to see if it buckled the wheel.
  • Should have took the pictures with todays newspaper ib view and a ruler/tape measure.

I see your point but payouts are dealt with via their insurers. Payouts don't come directly out of the highways budget. Of course the premiums will increase but that should be an incentive for them to do repairs and resurfacing properly and competently.

I reported a pothole not long ago, however, the response from the council was that it "wasn't at intervention level yet". So, instead of fixing it cheaply, they wait for it to get worse, then whilst moaning about the cost have to also risk payouts for vehicle damage.
