new boiler required

Last year our central heating finally gave up the ghost, and as we had switched ovr to British Gas, we asked them to quote us on a new boiler. B5ritish Gas adviseed that we must have a combi boiler fittted. For the supply, fitting and some minor pipe work to make good and operational we were quoted gbp 3500.00. I feel this to be a bit excessive, but asked for this quoe in writing. We are still awaiting the quote from BG, but have had a letter from them asking why we have not taken up their offer and also why did we want a copy of the quote. Am Iwrong to think this is excessive, and who can I approach for help. As the boiler has been put beyond repair by BG, we are not legible for the boiler scrapage scheme.

    Welcome to the forum.

BG cannot insist you have a Combi boiler, I suspect they said condensing boiler.

A combi boiler heats hot water direct and does not need a hot water tank. A conventional boiler still heats the hot water tank. The important thing to note is that both types of boiler are condensing.

There have been loads of posts on here about BG's very high prices and it would appear that if they want £3,500 a local plumber will probably charge £2,000 to £2,500.

However you need to get a detailed quote from BG stating exactly what type of boiler and what work is to be carried out, and then compare that with a couple of quotes from a local plumbers. In particular check if they quote for a power flush of the system; this can cost several hundred pounds and is almost certainly in the BG price.

Could you get one of those £400 scrappage grants that there has been talk about in the press lately.

    How old are you ?
If you are over 60 you may get the grant whether the boiler is working or not.

  • we are both under 60
  • Get a local tradesman to quote.

My BG quote was around £3k and i got mine fitted for around half the price. That was for a four bed house with thermostatic valves fitted
  • As I am an employee of " The Gas Board" I dont want to portraid as bias but since the scrappage scheme enq in new boilers have rocketed.

I will be the first to say BG are very expensive for installation of new systems and almost laughable.

But I hold my own view and are not shared by the company.

  • I am looking to get a new boiler for my mums house.

Had BGas round last month (before scrappage scheme officially announced) and they quoted £3500 for condensing boiler (no new rads, but new heating controls & room stat).

I am really, really struggling to get any local quotes. IO have now contacted 7 yes....7 local independents. I have had only 1 person round, who quoted £3450 and was going to put it in writing....but two phone calls and two weeks later.........still hasn't.

    What am I doing wrong?

How can I get a decent local independent to look at/advise?

All 7 I have asked have been from personal recommendations. I have now run out of those (friends that is!) and am considering flicking through the yellow pages.

This is making BGas look good!

    Any ideas?
  • Just had a quote myself from BG or £3500. It appears to be an excessive price but I too can't seem to find anybody cheaper who I trust to do a good job. I might just go with BG as they are throwing in 1 years homecare and the radiator valves. A nightmare to pay it out but unfortunatley it needs to be done!
