How do I make dried apple rings?(merged threads.)

Options
Can I do these in the oven and what temperature do I need to put them on (I have a gas oven) and how long do I need to bake them for?

I have a huge box of apples to use up that I bought from the market for £2 and I really need to use them up as they are not ones that will keep for much longer.

    Moggins,

I have no idea would love to know as well. And what about banana chips as I love those. But they normally cover them in oil or honey and I am trying to cutn fats out of my diet.

Oh this is my first post I can give advice on, rather than asking for it !!!

Apples are best peeled, cored and slice into rings about 1/4 inch thick. Soak them in a saline solution, made of 55g (2 oz) of salt to 4.5 litres (8 pints), for 5 minutes. Then drain them, pat them dry and then spread out to to trays for the oven. They need to go in a very cool oven for about 6 - 8 hours. I don't have gas, my fan oven is about 110c

Don't be afraid to experiment, the apples do shrink so the thicker you cut them to start with will alter the end result. The first time I done them I had the rings in the oven for 8 hours and they came out crunchy (lovely !) but then I only put them in for 6 hours and then they were softer. I have also tried pears, bananas and kiwis in the same method. Kiwis are to die for !!! I vary what I use depending on if I can buy cheap fruit, so it does not matter if you do different varieties at the same time

My husband and 2 boys (6 and 3) love these, it is good for them and it is something we do together at the weekends. I vary it depending on if I can get cheap fruit, so it does not matter if you do different varieties at the same time

Hope I have not rambled on too much and that it makes sense !!

Yes just peel them , cut them quite thick and then leave them in the solution for 10 minutes. Enjoy !

Do you store them in or out of the fridge? Do you know how long they keep once they're done? It sounds like a great idea for when there's a pile of reduced stuff on sale!

If you keep them in an airtight container then they last for ages. However in my house they never last long !

this takes me right back - I remember my mother drying apple rings and she had some lengths of thin dowelling that she threaded the cored apple rings onto then she put the dowel lengths on the oven shelf supports at the sides of the oven with the oven shelves removed so that the hot air could circulate all round. Think i'll have to try it myself
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
