where do I stand with BG?
Options
I had A door knocker come round about 3 years ago and he sold me gas and electric (yeah i know).
for the last 2 years ive had nothing but trouble from them, i was paying about £40pm and then i had a bill for £600  so i upped my bill to £80 pm....it was still going up so i was paying £120 pm.
now this got too much, i refuse to believe im using this much as i only live in a small 2bed terrace house and i don't even have central heating (which when i tell BG they simply don't believe me  )
so i went to consumer direct, they put BG complaints through to me and they re calculated my bill....i was informed i was owed £1100.00 which is alot.
a week later i received a bill saying i owe £350 (i never recieved any monies from them from what they say they owed me) so i called 'again' voicing my concern.
after going through to consumer direct AGAIN i was told i'd have to pay £80 pm to clear what i use and to payback what i owed.
i agreed and set up the direct debit for £80pm there and then, mostly because i'd had enough of calling round and sending letters etc etc.
i then checked my bank and the direct debit and it had been set up for £96pm
there's alot more to this but you have the basics, now they are saying they're issuing warrants or something?/????
my question is...is'nt the direct debit scenario attempted theft?
and the fact they have messed me about so much is surely some sort of gross negligence?
thank you soooo much in advance

What you need to establish is what your actual usage is, whether your meter readings are accurate and the bills reflect actual usage. What proportion of that £80 was for ongoing usage, and what proportion for clearing the debt? Without doing that no-one can say how much you really owe.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

hi macman, i have given them several readings over the last 18months and they recently told me i am using £40-£45 pm, then someone else from there complaints department told me im using £72 per month, but no bills ever came down regardless of whether i was paying £40, £60, £80 or even £120pm the bills kept going up. i have a tv, washing machine etc the norm, i dont have central heating and i use both gas for fire and cooker.
its my electric bill im concerned about by the way...i didnt put that0 -
The amount you are being billed is not relevant-it's your usage that matters. Go through all your bill and readings and work out your actual usage in Kwh in each billing period, you can then pro-rata to a daily consumption. Take a few daily readings and see if that's consistent and then work out what you are using/paying per day. That should tell you what the split is between debt and ongoing usage.
Electric shower, immersion heater? If the latter, is that being left on permanently? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
having a similar problem and found a few heaters switched I didn't know about - i thought they were off but turns out they weren't !
Has cut it right back now
Worth getting meter checked too (We did this and had to pay £40 as it;'s fine but it was good for piece of mind)(From £9000 in 2008)
Overdraft = 0.00
Credit card = £833.00

ok it's been a while since i posted this and i finally got them to put a new meter in (a check meter wouldnt fit) anyways ive used 190.5 kw in 15 days which equates to £21.79 on standard rate, thats around £40 pm which is what i expected....there rude little complaints person had been billing me £85 to £95 pm
can someone double check that 190.5 kw does actually add upto £21.79 with british gas for me for piece of mind please
the engineer also said it was faulty as he'd killed the power to my home and the meter was still going up lol
cant wait to put this chap in his place, he was sooooo arrogant
we actually joined them 4 and a half years ago, and thanks to consumer focus will be claiming back that many years0 -
Bgas are terrific..........ly horrible
We had a bill for over £700 come, winter quarter, 2 bed (small bungalow), night storage heaters+economy 7
except we werent on economy 7 tarrif, so they re-calculated it down by £177
except the timeswich (to supply E7 rate to night heaters) was on 6pm-midnight...
they came and removed the timeswitch without a word, so we still owe the 3000 units charged at 11p instead of 6p.....Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...0 -
What is horrible about them preventing you committing fraud?0

You (or someone) fiddled the timeswitch. Clearly fraud.0
