What did you do on the machine last ...install something ? Update a driver ? Update WIndows ?
Option 1) Use System Restore:
Problems like this are usually the result of one of the above gone gone wrong ...in which case you need to restore the machine back. You should beable to get into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key whilst the machine is booting, and then using Sytem Restore to sort out the problem.
OR
Option 2) Repair Windows:
Put your XP disc in the machine, and boot up - when prompted go for the "install" option (not the Recovery Console). XP should then find your existing installation of XP and offer to "Repair" it. Choosing this option will not delet any of your files/photos etc.0 -
could well be you've corrupted windows somehow, does it start in safe mode? do you have any recovery disks?0

Thanks i will try the repair first see if that corrects the issue.0

hmm sounds unusual, i'd be tempted start testing individual components:
you can download memtest86+ (google it) make a CD and use that to test your RAM is ok.
find out what make your hard disk us and download the apropriate manufacturers diagnostics program to test the hard disk for faulys/bad sectors
both cases you'll make a boot disk/CD on another computer and boot the bad machine from the disk/CD to run the test program
others might have other suggestions tho......
do you have good backups/all the info you need of the hard drive backed up elsewhere or is there anything you 'need' off the drive?0 -
all i really is all the photos of my little boy0

you may well need an external caddy and another pc, provided you hdd is ok you can transfer over the data (this will require actually taking out you hdd but it really is easy!.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
windows wont start in safe mode, what do think i should do next?0

If you have no backups of the photos, then you need to concentrate on getting those off first - you will need some way of attaching the drive to another computer , either in an external caddy or with a special cable ....
Once you have done that you can try a clean install of XP. If you still have problems , it may mean the drive itself is on the way out.0 -
How long did you give the repair routine before abandoning it? I would try and again and leave it longer-sometimes it can take a long time and nothing appears to be happening.
And when you do recover your pics, please take a back up before you do anything else. All hard drives will fail eventually, and you may not get any warning. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
