what a day - faulty shelving / greedy dog disaster.

- what a day - I was half woken in the night by a noise, and fell back to sleep, I only just registered it, and thought I had dreamed it...
...when I got up this morning I went into the kitchen, and found that...
a) the dog had been sick
and
b) one of the kitchen shelves brackets had worked its way out of the wall somehow, and the noise had been the things on the shelf falling off...
...at first the two seemed unconnected, then I spotted a broken, empty jam jar on the floor - gradually I realised this had been a full jar of apricot jam, which had fallen off the shelf, and broken on the floor... but all the jam was gone.. so the penny dropped, the dog had eaten a pound of apricot jam... and perhaps some bits of glass
I was doubtful that she had, as she seemed so happy - even pleased with herself, but that was probably the effects of the jam, and she had vomited, so I wondered if any foreign objects would already have been ejected, but I called the vet for advice anyway...
To cut a long story short, the vet told me to take her in - she was x rayed at the vets and they could see a piece of glass in her stomach.
The dog seemed happy and well, and the vet felt it better to operate whilst the glass was in her stomach, and before it had the chance to pass into her intestines and potentially cause her to be very ill, which would make a later operation more risky. I agreed and asked them to go ahead.
She was operated on late morning, her stomach emptied, one large shard of glass found, re x rayed after this, and all appears clear - she has now come round, but is still in the vets, and is expected to stay there for the next 48 hours to check she is ok, and just in case any smaller pieces of glass have been missed...
I am so relieved the operation is over at least - I was so worried about her earlier! I am also glad I did not delay and got her to the vet. (I am also very glad I have pet insurance!!)
Please keep your fingers crossed for a good recovery for the greedy dog Badger, (who will eat anything, ...even broken glass if it tastes good apparently) it seems ever so quiet here without her!

Oh good lord, what a night/day! I and my two will be sending you and Badger all our very best good wishes for a speedy recovery and some firmer brackets!
What a way to spend a Saturday!0 -
I loved the line about how she was looking very pleased with herself! I really hope she'll be ok & that you are to & thank god you realised about the glass & took her in rather than waiting, also for insurance! I think when she's home & recovered you're gonna have to allow her to roll (& remain unwashed) in her fox !!!! now lol hope she's ok x0

Hugs to Badger from me and all my "gang". Hope she recovers soon"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

Thabks for all the good wishes folks - I feel so sorry for her, and I am just hoping that they found all the bits of glass and that there are no further complications - they have said I can ring in the morning, at 9.30 and see how she is, and if she is OK tomorrow I may be able to go and see her.
I really, really hope she is ok, she is such a smashing little dog and I am so attached to her...0 -
