Toyota key stuck in the ignition.... help please

Hi everyone, I've got a Rav 4 and the key is stuck in the ignition. I can't get it to turn to the off position so can't pull it out. I called a locksmith but he didn't know what to do, he suggested taking it to the dealer. This is all very well but not much use at 7pm on a bank holiday.

I don't want to leave the key in the car overnight for obvious reasons, I would still like to have a car in the morning. Plus, if I leave it like this surely the battery will be dead by morning anway.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the stupid thing out?

No the steering lock isn't on, it's stuck on the ACC position, I can still shift the gears (it's an automatic) so I can drive it because it will move in the direction of ON just not to OFF.

I've not got any WD40 but will send hubby up to the garage to get some.

will it press 'in' at all Toto - I used to have a problem with my Carlton and I could press the key in, the barrel would 'slide' in and it would then turn it so I could get it out.

some autos (mostly column shift, but worth a try) need to have the gear selector in neutral or park before the key can be removed,is it definatly in one of these?

No it won't BB, I'm just over at the Toyota forum, hopefully they can help. I will take it to the dealer if I have to but the last time we went there it cost £170 for the plastic casing on the key, not the working bits or a new key, just the plastic case. I swore never again :)

Yes, it's in park at the moment, I'll do and try in neutral though, it's worth a go, thanks :)

good point...my new Astra did that, and I spent a while swearing at it before realising that it has an interlock.

how about rocking the steering wheel? At the same time as jiggling the key?

or - taken from another forum so no guarantee and is possibly the problem in reverse?
