Lonely mum

Afternoon,

My mum has just recently moved from Manchester to Essex and is struggling. She is 42 and has a 7 year old boy. She has the odd chat with the mum's in the playground, but other than that, she only has me and my brother.
She is on benefits so doesn't have any spare money to go to cafe's, pubs etc. However I think she is falling into a depression at not having anyone to talk to. We have been on the local council website and local newspapers etc, but most are online based and she doesn't have the internet.
Does anyone know of any groups or people that I can contact on her behalf?

Thanks

Joanne

Can she join the PTA at her son's school? Maybe join a free p/t college course? Go to the local library to enquire if any groups meet there? Enquire at the local Volunteers Centre or CVS?

Could she look at getting a school time job? Not saying it to "get her off benefits" but because the social aspect of it might be a great way to start her speaking to people. My mum had a breakdown a few years ago now and she found that being at home was actually really bad for her and she only started to perk up when she returned to work (different company and much less stressful environment). It helped her get confident again and she now works for another company and is first through the door when there is a social do on :)

Could she do some volunteering during school hours? Maybe in the school, listening to children read, or in a charity shop, or doing office work in a charity, all depending on what skills she has.

If you google volunteer and either Essex or the place where she is, you should find a local volunteer 'agency' that can help her find local opportunities. And they should have a phone number ...

if she's a single parent, then try "Gingerbread" it's a nationwide support group to help single parents have another adult to talk to.

  • Hi Guys,

Sorry to re post this, but we have tried ginerbread, they came out to her a couple of times but that was it. They seemed to 'fade' out. My mum is attending a english and maths course at college to help with getting back to work, however she struggles to get about due to various health problems.
I have been on net mums, however they seem to be young girls with babies. What she needs is some adult company just to talk. She has joined a group which meet every week, which is good, but they charge so much and some of the meets are miles away. I am at a loss what to do.
I know it's not my problem as my mum is an adult, but it upsets to me to know that she just wants someone to talk to and hasn't. It's really upsetting as she's a lovely person.

I saw a poster recently that I was sure was ''talktosally' but I have googled it and nothing comes up???

Any help would be great :)
