30th Birthday, present & party ideas (merged)

Options
After seeing the "wedding" tips thread I thought I would look for a Birthdays thread where I could possibly find some ideas and insperation but I could not find any so thought I would start one off for myself.

It's my Wifes 30th Birthday in June and I am racking my brain as to what special event I could arrange in order to make it a day to remember.

Her actual Birthday is on a Saturday which is a good start.

I would like to involve as many friends and family as possible but I don't want the costs to spiral out of control.

We live in Buckinghamshire so if anyone has any ideas as to what I can arrange or possible venues that have been recommended or you have personally used yourself, then I would be most greatfull for any and all suggestions.

I have already had the idea of a nice meal for 2 then onto place of hire (no idea what or where) where all friends and family will be waiting as a surprise, lots of party banners, balloons, party poppers etc.

Many thanks for your help and suggestions in advance.

It sounds like your request is very specific, i.e. looking for a hire venue in one area. I would suggest searching on google for venue hire in your preferred location and see what comes up. You could always have a look on confetti.co.uk for venues for weddings, as they tend to do hire for all sorts of events.

Personally I would say see if you can find a social club, most towns have a sports club or factory workers club that have a bar you can hire and then bring in your own food (you could order it in advance from Waitrose!) or get trusty friends and family to make a dish and bring something with them (get a good sister or close relative to organise the contents) that way they will feel more involved and it will reduce the costs. I don't think there is a need to go all out on major costs for a venue, you could save the money and treat you both to a nice weekend away somewhere.

    Good luck

My friend and I are 30 in June.

We're also going to be heavily pregnant or with newborns on the actual day of our 30th's...great timing, eh?!

Therefore, we're having a party in late May "2 fat ladies 60th birthday party". We've been able to hire the private bar at jumpin jaks for free and are going to gather all our nearest and dearest for a proper night out...which we haven't had in ages! We're also getting a "bubbly" reception (which will taste rubbish no doubt) for free, as well as party poppers, hats, balloons etc which they're providing for free too. they also told us they can arrange fireeaters, magicians, entertainers etc at a small charge. If you've already had a meal and Jumpin jaks is your wife's sort of place, then it would be an ideal place to go onto after food.

Is she into these "experience" days out? My best ever birthday present hubby got me was to go to a zoo in essex and I fed a fully grown male tiger his dinner!! It was brilliant....something I'll never forget. I want to go back soon and feed the cheetah next time. (not to the tiger :D )

If shes got something she's always wanted to do maybe something like that is worth looking into.

This is what I really wanted to organize for my 40th but could not find a venue suitable ...Birthday fete.... Hire a bucking bronco bull ...blow up sumo suits..adult bouncy castle...etc etc! You can hire a big BBQ and have that ...June is the perfect time ..People would be talking about it for ages! There are websites that specialise in hiring unusual things like this
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

    Davey,
We went to Bistro Live in Nottingham for a 30th (I've googled to see that there's one in Bucks for you!) and had a great night. Set meal, table drinks service, band or acts included, music quiz, small dance floor if required (dancing on tables positively expected!), lots of other groups (henns, 30th/40th) enjoying themselves to add tonnes of atmosphere. We added to it by going in fancy dress (famous person theme) which is something we'd always no-no'd in the past. I'd like to think my Zorro outfit went down very well, but pinching the guitar from a very pregnant Maria (Sound of Music) for a Bon Jovi 'air' guitar solo with Ali G and Ozzie Osborne was my highlight of the night.
Food was excellent, and although there must have been 150 people in the venue, it felt like it was our own, with the table service etc. It made a pleasant change from trawling around bars/restaurant/club, and was a top night. Maybe very personal taste, but everyone who came (even the anti fancy dressers) had a super night (photos to prove!)
    Good luck...
    John

One of the best ideas so far is either a Bus or Bardge Party in London. I think I will investigate more on the Bardge as that sounds like a good laugh plus it passes a lot of the major sites in London...well the new one's anyway..!!!!

    Thanks for all your suggestions

my 30th was in february - hired local working men's club room for £50 & had help with catering - sandwiches, party food (on offer at iceland??). loads of people there i hadnt seen since uni - am constantly in touch with girls i lived with & they in touch with some more so it spread. did our own music on laptop so no dj to pay & ensured i liked all the songs! borrowed disco lights from friend (request on freecycle if u dont know anyone?). everyone bought me drinks so no cost there! kids welcome too. fantastic night.
whatever u do have a great night!

I celebrated my 30th over about a week, went out for a meal with family to fujiama in newcastle (i think there is one in london) where they cook everything infont of you and do lots of tricks with knifes etc throwing stuff about including eggs, and had my age spelled out in fried rice (what a tribute) Also went to comedy club with my friends then spent 3 days at euro disney with my OH. For OH 30th i organised a suprise party me mam did the food and the room hire was free if they took over £100.00 on the bar (which they did) Drinks were really cheap and we also had karaoke. Its my SIL 30th soon and we are going to london to see a show then having lunch at jamie olivers 15.
