Tesco VOIP

Have just bought a Tesco VOIP setup (well bought 2 in fact cos will be living in 2 seperate houses soon) and i must say its a good setup. The phones are £20 each or 2 for £30 and with each phone you get £5 credit, which is quite good considering the following prices:

Calls to standard Land Lines: 2p pm
Calls to mobiles: 10p pm

Calls to standard international land lines: 2p pm (25 countries, see bottom of post)
Calls to mobiles (usa, canada, china & singapore): 2p pm
Calls to mobiles (the other 21 countries): see website http://www.tescointernetphone.com/about/rates/08_call_rates/

Calls to other Tesco Internet Phone numbers are free.
Calls to voicemail are free.

  • Correct link for all rates is http://www.tescointernetphone.com/about/rates

Some call rates look expensive to me compared to 1899/18185,etc and some of the other cheap VOIP providers .

But calls to 0845 less then 1p a minute at all times.

Calls to 0870 2p a minute at all times.

Tesco VOIP doesn't look good at all to me. But then I've been happily getting free calls for over 10 months.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Any system which uses a USB connected telephone handset like this (and therefore only works when the computer is switched on) is always going to be a lot less convenient than the services that work with SIP type telephone to IP adapters (that only need you to leave the router powered on and work independently of the computer).

However the 0870 rates do look good for anybody who has no alternative to calling those numbers.

The Tesco IP phone is a Yealink USB-P1K.

    http://www.yealink.com/en/products.asp?TypeName=USB%20Phone&cTypeName=USB%B5%E7%BB%B0

If you want to use it with Skype or other IP phone providers the software to do so is on the manufacturers website:

    http://www.yealink.com/en/skypedown.asp
    http://www.yealink.com/en/otherdown.asp

Tested & works fine with Skype.

  • I use the Tesco Phone with Internetcalls.com £8.25 sign up for free calls to landlines in 40 countries. You must spend the money within 120 days. I got my drivers from here http://www.yamamoto-group.co.uk/index.php?page=download

Tesco is very poor value but with one amazing exception. UAE calls are 2p a minute. Martin's cheapest listed to the UAE are 5p a minute.
