My electricity bill

This quarter it's £35.84. Same quarter last year was 48.96.
I did not switch suppliers, but made the following changes as soon as I joined MSE:
All lightbulbs replaced with low energy ones.
No standbys at all at any time.
No lights on anywhere except in the room I'm in at the time.
Less TV watching (it's mostly rubbish anyway) and more radio listening (ok. DAB uses us more electricity but surely not as much as a T%V?)
Keeping an old fashioned kettle with some water on one of the heaters so that the water gets quite warm and when I want to boil it for a cuppa I just pour it into the electric kettle and it boils almost immediately.
Using, about half of the time my old laptop which needs exactly half the energy as my new one. Well, this saving will go when the lappy dies...
I think £13+ saving on the winter bill for a small flat is not bad. I suppose the same changes for a bigger home would produce larger savings.
So get to it folks!
And thanks to MSE for giving me the right ideas! :T

Surely you can reduce that bill? Or have you already made all the changes that are possible to you?Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
spare a thought for me... the kids afterschool nanny (only twice a week, phew...) comes from Uganda and doesn't seem to appreciate that 18C is a perfectly reasonnable temperature to set the thermostat at.
Results, twice a week when I come home the house is desperatly trying to reach 28C....I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -

wow, just reread that and realised you said per quarter! well done. you prompted me to go and switch off 3 unnecessary lights and the microwave.
our electric bill is high as we got them to add our outstanding balance onto our monthly d/d when we changed payment methods. it should hopefully go down as i am trying to be more conscious of unnecessay usage and we have stopped using an extra freezer and fridge. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
That sounds a hell of a lot to be paying out PP!!!
My electric bill is around £45 a month and I thought that was a lot, but there's two of us here 24/7 both using computers daily (I never switch mine off) plus I have a habit of falling asleep and leaving the tv on all night... not to mention all the vivariums I have, each with heating/lighting sources on 24/7!

I must admit that I prefer the temperature in my home to be on the cool side. Perhaps because I was born and raised at the foot of the Alps, I find a cooler environment more stimulating.
Rather than up the heating, I put on warm clothing. I find a cooler air on my face and hands invigorating. Just as well, because sometimes my surveys require me to be out an about in the winter at 6 am!
I believe we can adapt to cooler temperatures very easily, and the sooner we do this at a personal and global level, the better for our pockets and the environment.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
