If buying fruit & veg from a supermarket, is it ok to chop off the bits you don't want, for example the stalk of a brocolli?
If you choose which apples or bananas to buy, why not choose the bits of brocolli you want to buy?
I'm guessing you'd only save a few pence, but every little helps...

Funny that I'd also thought of taking my peeler in on Sunday and peeling my pots' & carrots instore, then boning the chicken & getting it re-weighed. Agreed we are paying for bits we don't use but suppose that goes in the price.
I suppose you could pick off the stalk but I wouldn't want to go through the embarrasement of explainig if I got caught. What could they do you for Breaking Brocolli.0 -
i suspect they will just do you for the 12" blade you are weilding instead of worrying about a bit of vegetable!0

My thoughts too, wouldn't really fancy arriving in Tesco's to find several people wielding knives, or even potato peelers :eek:GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
was intrigued by this thread's title!Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0

When I'm REALLY skint, I remove the stalks from mushrooms!! - reduces their weight by loads. But do have slight conscience about it!
As Mr T says, "every little helps" !!0 -
I once saw an elderly lady demanding someone cut off the stalks of her brocoli, this was in Sanisburys, the staff were very obliging and did so !!0

ive seen people break the storks off brocoli ,they alway look very shifty and guilty when doing it. which always draws attention to them, i have weighed the odd bit of stork ,out of interest, it really dont amount to much, so i concluded its not worth the funny looks,0

I've never gone quite as far as taking the stalks off veggies but, when I buy grapes I always remove any dodgy looking ones from the bag.
Oh, and I eat the broccoli stalks raw so they don't get wasted.0 -
lol, was also intrigued by the name of the thread :rotfl:
I always remove the stalks off tomatoes, not cos i'm tight mind, just cos they remind me too much of spiders, and if one inadvertently should drop on the floor and wasn't picked up, if i came in the room and saw it there i'd have a fit thinking a tarantula (sp) had come to get meNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission
