Can anyone suggest software (XP) that will help me manage my monthly budget - ideally with a day-to-day planner for income and expenditure, so that I can see any shortfalls before they occur? I've tried Microsoft Money, but it seems very cumbersome.

I agree with tinalives, I started using quicken in April 1996, soon moved to Mirosoft Money as found this better with online accounts etc....I love it also, have all my transactions back to April 1996 and budgets can be created themselves based on past transactions after assigning to categories for a set period of time.
I have tried many but always stuck with Microsoft Money, I use it everyday for budgeting, balances, share prices, pensions, mortgage interest/principal remaining, bills etc0 -

I sometimes wonder how I managed for years without using software to manage my finances.
Very true, my wife thinks I am a freak because I use Money on a daily basis and have done for most of the 10 years use (quicken then money).....I tend to start telling her almost everything about past transactions and what we can expect in the future.....sounds like my wife is right, I think I need to get out more
Not sure what I would do if I was not allowed to use it anymore0 -
I used Excel for everything mathematical. Along with the built in VBA it can be made to do pretty much anything.Happy chappy0

I use the spreadsheet from open office. Very much like excel but open office is free.
Does what we need.
We run 3 spreadsheets. Once for the household and one each for me and my husband.

Don't get me wrong spreadsheets are fine for smaller scale cashflow, budgets etc, I have used many in the past, designed / wrote my own etc. It just depends what you want from a finance package. Money connects to my 10 different online accounts, downloading the transactions automatically, share prices for my portfolio. For the level of detail and functionality I need, nothing will do but Money.
If an xl sheet is all you need, the one on the MSE site is good for basics....

Depends how busy you are. I manually open all of my online accounts each day. Keeps me busy and when you're saving time is cheap.Happy chappy0

Yup... I've got to concur with the Money fans. I think it is excellent - but don't think I am even using it properly yet! I'm just working my way through the Money for Dummies book! It's great.
One question... my version is the US version (I actually got it free from a Microsoft stand at a Conference in the US). Can anyone shed any light on whether or not there is a UK-oriented version?

Bertie,
Yes there is a UK version and you should try and use that if you are going to use more and more of the features. If I remember rightly, the US version does not connect to (some?) UK bank for downloads and other features can be yankyfied and cause (minor) problems/annoyances. The UK version is avaiable from most places like Amazon, I would check the current retail price and then watch out for a bargain on Ebay (just confirm with the seller on Ebay that it is definately the UK version before bidding tho') . Currently on Amazon for £16.97....
