hi all,
i usually shop at tesco, but tried asda today and ended up spending over £100 for family of 7 (normally spend £60) .
i am just starting to cook from scratch so is this the reason for the extra cost?? or is asda not that cheap after all?
any advice / ideas appreciated,
thanks,
louise x

I think that you spend more when you see different stuff to usual - I know that I do!!! There would be less difference if you kept to a shopping list. The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0

I think they are about the same, perhaps it is just because you are seeing different items, I do the same when I go to Morrisons!February Grocery Challenge £250.00
Spend so far £230!! (Ohhh my days HELP) still got almost 2 weeks left!!0 -
Did you do a meal plan for the week.. then a list off the meal plan and then shop only for that??? If not give it a go or try on line shopping and use one of the money off vouchers on the vouchers board sticky at the top. I find they arte about the same but normally go to tesco for the points.0

yes, i did a 7 day meal plan to include brekkie, lunch and dinner, only extas were 4 packs of wagon wheels @25p each, turkey breasts reduced to £2.32 and a massive 480 box of tea bags at£3.17 as i use loads of these.
i was going to netto's but was worried about not getting it all.

Something else to bear in mind is that Tesco/Sainsbury's have more BOGOFs than Asda. So if you're happy to change brands depending on what the special offers are (and stockpile your supplies when necessary!) Tesco can work out cheapest. But if you know what you like, Asda tends to be a bit cheaper on basic pricing.
Also, from what some people have said on this forum, the Asda online delivery service sounds more customer friendly than Tesco!Operation Get in Shape

I know I went to tesco today.... madness!!!!
I can only suggest if it were me I would be looking at what meals you are doing. we are a family of 2 adults a 3, 5 and 14 year old and a dog and all have packed lunches... we eat very well with wine about 50.00 a week and look everything from scratch.0 -
I don't shop at either that much but when I have done I thought that Asda was a bit cheaper than Tesco generally.
It depends what you are going for though, as Tesco and Sainsburys have a lot more BOGOF or BOGOHP etc so when you work out the cost for those they can be better value.
To get the best value though I think it is just a case of shopping everywhere to get the best deals, ie Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Lidl, even M&S.
I got caught out by Lidl a couple of months ago when I wanted to treat myself. I bought a papaya and it was 98p only to go to Tesco a few days later where they had a two pack for £1.39. It was one of those fancy packs that has a fruit for you to 'eat now' and another one that will ripen in 4-5 days which would have been perfect for me.
A lot of the time when I have been shopping somewhere and found something cheaper somewhere else it has been by a penny or two, especially in Tesco and Sainsburys so I was really annoyed with the papaya from Lidl. You live and learn though and I won't get a papaya from Lidl again unless they reduce them to under 70p but I only buy them a few times a year anyway.0 -

I always shop at asda, not only do i think tescos own food is horrid but i always spend on average £20 or so more at tesco. I actually hate tesco with a vengence and will avoid going there completly. Not only that, we have a tesco express near me, and they have added anything up to 10p on all the stock there. 10p doesnt sound a lot but if you need to buy a few items it soon adds upWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

I have reduced my shop since starting MSE from about 120.00 per week to about 50.00. with all the tips from the OS,
changed lots of things to value products, by no cleaning products except vaule wash powerder which I mix with shops own one and dishwasher tabs which I get when BOGOF and cut in half so buying 1 box lasts 4 times as long, value bleach and vinegar.
Always get a tesco wine box @ 8.99 for 3ltrs (kids think it's a part of the fridge)
Meal plan...and have cheep nights such as, bacon and egg baps, HM pizza, toast and whatever, sausage and mash.
make my own bread and cakes.
use the slow cooker to cook cheep cuts of meat.
No ideas of my own just tips from all of the lovely OS gang.
some post they spend less and eat really well.. I am still trying to get my bill down.0
