Amazing!
I cant believe how much money they were giving to the banks!!
I have recently converted my girlfriend into being a money saver, the one thing that really brought it home to her was the idea of the banks seeing you as a big pound sign when you walk in to see them. It has cost one of the big four a fair bit of cash!
Well done martin!

Great to see Martin getting a little more worked up with the family! Can’t believe they had that much money sat in savings with an outstanding mortgage!
I was the same a few months ago with regards to sticking to one provider (Barclays) but after reading on here I’ve ended up with providers offering much better rates. I think that really hits the nail on the head for a lot of people, you stay with your bank because you think they will give you a good deal for being a loyal customer and because your already familiar with them!0 -
First time I have managed to catch the show live.
Guilty as charged for never having switched banks in all my working life
but my saving grace is I did open an ING account on Martin's recommendation a couple of years ago
I do remember being angry when my Mum died to discover that the friendly Bank Manager had left a running total of £10,000 in her current account earning absolutely zilch.
Just a quick mention too of https://www.call18185.co.uk which are now the cheapest for dialing mobiles (wasn't when Martin recorded the show) 5p per minute w/days and 2p per minute at the w/ends with a 4p connection charge0 -
Martin must have felt extremely good after today's family's savings. I wish I was able to suddenly make changes like theirs and save that amount of money. I am sure there are thousands of older people out there who just stick to the same companies for their needs year in year out. We were a bit like that up to a few years ago but plucked up the courage to stop being loyal.
Looking forward to tomorrows programme. Can't get much better.0 -
apart from the point about not remaining loyal to poor performing companies was that it is so important if you are a couple that you both have an understanding of your finances should anything happen. shall be sitting DH in front the tv to watch the show on video as he is just not interested in anything to do with money & I shall be giving him a good talking too!'Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams and fairy tales, thats's all she ever thinks about riding with the wind' - Little wing, Jimi Hendrix0

Just watched my first MMR programme. Thought there were some good pointers for lots of people who are 'behind the times' financially. Remember, it used to be thought savvy to have a good relationship with one's bank. Loyalty was a virtue. I think older people need to be made aware that their money can be just as safe elsewhere, which is what I think holds them back, especially if they have a local branch and do most of their banking face to face.
Good programme! Just need to convince MIL !HLK

I've only just got my head around using 1899!
Enjoyed the programme - I think it's a generational thing also. My grandparents never discussed money and they tended to stick with the same bank/service/shops etc. regardless of price or service.
Edilass - can't believe you haven't switched your bank yet! I can only presume you already have a well-paying and performing current account with one of the banks recommended in Martin's best buys!0 -

Well, I advised my newly redundant mother of this show this morning and suggested she watched it, I'm really hoping she did since she too is a fool for loyalty over savvy.
Here's hoping this show makes lots of people less poor, if not rich per se!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 002 :rotfl:0
