Free upgrade phone on Orange OVP Virgin

Options
Found a post about this in uk.telecom.mobile.

If you have an Orange OVP Virgin account then have a look at the upgrades on the Orange website. I logged into my account online and there were a few phones available. I got a SE K300i free. There were a couple of basic Nokias available too. Some other higher spec phones too at a discount such as an SPV C550 for £89

Orange didn't used to offer upgrades on this tariff as there is no monthly fee. By accepting the upgrade you are entering another 12 month contract but I'm happy with that as there is no monthly charge and I was keeping it anyway as a backup.

    GeoThermal,

Just been reading a few things on the Orange website, I noticed that it says "Your estimated upgrade fee is: £0.00" however as Customer on the OVP Virgin tariff don't pay line rental there will be a full price handset charge!!

    Just to make you aware!
  • I didn't get that. Maybe they have changed it, or maybe it depends on how long you have had the contract.

I did get something like Your estimated upgrade fee is: £0.00, if this is incorrect we will contact you before dispatch, or words to that effect.

<edit> There is also an upgrade charge and handset charge. On the one I picked these were both £0.00. Did you perhaps pick one with a handset charge listed?

They have never had either upgrades or 12 month contracts on this tariff. Perhaps you have switched to a different tariff.
  • No I definitely haven't changed tariff and it said by accepting the upgrade you are accepting a new 12 month contract on the tariff. Maybe the latter is just their default message for upgrades.

It just goes to show that there must be quite a few people on this tariff. As they've not being allowing new connections on it for nearly 2 years, they've obviously had to make some changes.

I have read where (back in February 2004) Orange had more subscribers on OVP Virgin than Virgin Mobile had themselves!

Since then we have seen the end of Everyphone and free calls to 0800 numbers, but it is still a far better tariff than Orange's PAYG offering.

2AX, they used to do upgrade on OVP virgin did it couple of times, and at the time when it first came out could get some "VERY" good deals as new connections. but since than Orange decrease the subsidy on it. I remember at the time a Motorola MR602 for £19.99 at a time it would cost like £100. Also you are signing (if new) or as an upgrade (Cause you can get an upgrade now it is just charge at full price which can be more expensive than Pay as you go) a 12 month contract with no line rental charge. So in actual fact it is not really meaniful.

Orange blocked this way of getting something for nothing within 2-3 days of the original post. They will charge full list price for phones eg £195 for a k700i compared to the £30 quoted

  • I've received my phone today. It was free with a no upgrade fee. I only knew about it because I saw the original posts on this. It wouldn't have occured to me that I could have an upgrade on this tariff. I must be Orange's least profitable customer: OVP Virgin phones used to come with £5 of credit and I still have some of that left. It's better than PAYG for an emergency phone for the car as they don't disconnect for lack of use.
  • According to the uk.telecom.mobile newsgroup this offer is still available.
