From a detached to a semi - am I MAD??

I live in a detached house which I am fed up putting money into as its 40 year old and constantly updating. I have had itchy feet for about the past 2years and yes it is a bad time to move I know.
I have seen a semi-detached for sale which is a lot bigger than my house and in the same area which I live in. I really love these houses as my friend lives in one.
I like where I live but would love a bigger house, but with our budget can only afford a semi, people say I am mad to consider it in case I cant stick the neighbours.
Bear in mind that I dont even have my house up for sale but would consider selling.

My first house was semi. When the old lady next door died a young couple bought it. They worked in a restaurant and regularly came home late and had loud and protracted arguments. We couldn't even enjoy eavesdropping as they argued in Chinese:D .
Would I buy another semi? Only if I absolutely had to.0 -
I ended up getting a detached property cos I was fed up hearing next door's t.v. music, arguements, hoovering ect. and TBH I couldn't go back to living in a semi so I agree with your friends BUT remember all houses need updated at some point !0

Yes I guess you guys are right, its just to get a detached house of that size would be another 50,000 and there is no way I could afford it
The semi is in superb condition but like you say it would be a nightmare if you have bad neighbours
Our house is 40 years olds maybe thats not that bad,
My worry is that I will move and curse the day I moved into a semi
I have lived in a detached house nearly all my life.0 -
How about extending your present home?0
-
Yeah I had thought of that, the only way I could extend would be out the side of the house as my back garden isnt that big.
I guess I could get a good price from a builder as there isnt a lot of work about at the moment.
Would love a big bathroom as my house has a separate toliet, which I hate and there is no way of knocking through as the toliet and bathroom dont run parallel its like an L shape.0 -
But what if the neighbours are really nice folk? I think the chances of them being nice are far greater than them being bad. I guess though, those odds depend on the area and price of the property to an extent. If you bought a 60k hole on some rough council estate the chances of naff neighbours will be far greater than those of a £400k house on a posh street.
Since you house is detached and you want extra space, is there any potential to extend? That may prove cheaper than actually moving.0 -
Yeah, see what you mean about the areas, although my Mum and Dad lived in a nice area when they lived in a semi and their neighbours were pensioners and drove them mad, they had a grandfathers clock that chimed all night and was loud, they were neighbours from hell!!
Might get an architect out see if he had any good ideas!0 -
I think the building design of a semi is really important to minimising noise from next door.
If the stairs / kitchen / bathroom are on the adjoining wall with the living area and bedrooms on the exterior wall then this is quieter IMHO. Having the living rooms together is when you are more likely to hear next door's TV or music etc

Simply answer - yes you are mad! :-))
I have had a terrace, then a semi, now a detached. Would i EVER go back? Not until i had sold everything else i posisbly could to avoid it.
Terrace house - one side a nice old lady who i didnt even know existed, other side was a young chap who again rarely heard but knew he was there.. He started to rent it out to a single mum with 4 kids by 4 dads. Kylie, Chesney, chantelle etc etc. She used to bellow at them from when they woke up (usually 5am) until they went to sleep (usually 11pm) - guess they had a nice nap whilst i was at work!
Semi - Lovely old couple who i didnt hear anything from for 3 years, gradually the lady started to go gradually deaf, thats when the TV started to get louder and louder. I used to hear the stereo at 6:30 everyday (she too used to get 40 winks mid arvo)...
Detached? - Awesome - Mortgage doubled, it was painful for first 3 months but havent looked back and wouldnt think twice about EVER having neighbours i couldnt just switch off from. If i could ever not afford i would go back to a 3 bed, or even a 2 bed detached before i went to a Semi.
(Missus had a flat when we met - only stayed there about 5 times ever!)0 -
