Thanks for the response - think I will try it for the six months and see. Its only going to be on a line that I use for broadband and the odd call - so probably worth it to reduce the line rental and get the free £80. (PO £50 and Quidco £30).0

Me too, the occasional call on what's basically an internet line. Thats if they ever connect me. Signed up 08th Jan, rang them yesterday to find out what the delay is and was told my account seems to have slipped thru the net for an unknown reason and would endeavour to have me connected within 14 days. That'll make it nearly two months from application. Hope yourr patient !!!!0 -

Out of interest - there's a post early about this no longer being a BT line for broadband .. is this "strictly correct" ie if I asked say virgin for BB on that line would there be a problem ?- as surely its still routed via the exchangeAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

I have recently asked both Virgin and Naims whether it would be a problem and they have both said it would be OK. Naims went into a bit more detail as shown below:-
"We will be able to supply you with broadband as the line still belongs and is
managed by B.T. all the post office are doing is putting the line rental in their name
and paying B.T. from the money you pay them. They of course get a discount for being
a large customer.
PLEASE ASK THE POST OFFICE ABOUT THIS.
PLEASE BEWARE if you decide to move your telephone call charges to
another supplier e.g. Back to B.T. or over to another company.
You will also need to move the LINE RENTAL either back to B.T. or
over to the new company. At the point of moving the LINE RENTAL
B.T. will issue a new account number to your line and this will remove all services (inc Broadband ) from your line as they would if the new account number was a result of moving home.
To regain your broadband we would then have to instruct B.T. to re activate your line and they would charge £47 inc vat This will be the same regardless of any ISP as whilst some ISp's may offer the initial activation free of charge they could not afford to keep paying it everytime a customer did something that resulted in an account number change e.g. the name on the phone account from one husbands to the wifes.
The phone companys concerned should be able to make arrangements to avoid this but please a get written confirmation from them to ensure you will not face any unexpected fees."
I have emailed BT to try and get the suggested "written confirmation" that they can make arrangements to avoid this but have yet to get a reply.0 -
Thats great cheers
although shows need to be careful on a line with BBAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
I changed to the Post Office homephone following Martin's coloumn showing it to be the cheapest provider. I have reread all the info and, NOW, can't see anything on their repairs or how long they take to repair the phone line. My phone went out of order on Friday pm the 21st July and now on the 25th July I still have no service. It is no good having a Customer Services 7 days per week and 24 hours a day if they can do nothing. I am told that the Post Office Home Phones have to request help from BT to repair the line. Let's face it BT are not going to repair the Post Office phones before theirs. I am told that they may start to work on my line this pm but if they find anything wrong they will phone and make an appointment. So, how do the people who have not got mobiles or Skype manage. I am classed as severely disabled - if I didn't have Skype - which by the way I got after recommendation of Martin, what would I do - since I cannot go to a callbox - lets face it there are few of them left - and finding one working these days could be a long task. So, Post Office - what do you expect your target for repairs to be? Is there anyone else who has had the same experience as me? Many thanks to Martin since I have made mega savings by taking his advice both for myself and husband and also a near neighbour.0

Cat women the repair time would be the same for BT and post office the repair arm has been spilt and all repairs go into a system now and they are pick up as and when they enter. Do not favour BT customers or POL or CPW etc customers. But you would get higher priority cause you are disabled (as long as you registered when you join that you were disabled. If have some problems tomorrow if you contact me offline I can see what I can do as a postmaster / sect for the NFSP.0

"Even so, the Post Office may find its fixed-line phone venture is very hard going, analysts said."
I think they may be getting desperate.
Earlier this week my wife was hassled in Chelmsford Post Office about Homephone - she wasn't in the slightest bit interested - but rather than being rude (unlike me - though I think the salesperson was the rude one), to escape she agreed to receive details of Homephone.
Today a letter arrives - 'Welcome to Homephone' - they will be informing BT of our decision to switch providers .............
Needless to say I was a little angry. I phoned to cancel - 'no only your wife can cancel ' ....... even though the phone is in my name and not my wife's!
So my wife had to be called upon .......
Finally, I found a 'complaints' phone number in the 'Homephone' booklet - the lady I spoke to explained that she was in general customer services, did not work directly for the Post Office and couldn't really take my complaint - I should write instead ...........
Enough! I never want to touch anything sold (mis-sold?) through the Post Office again.0 -
I work in the PO, and it's quite a process to change to Homephone. We have to take all sorts of details from you, such as home tel no, address etc, and as it's a contract, I think there's something to sign.
Surely your wife must have realised?
I would normally complete my conversation with customer saying "here you are, you're transferred over to Homephone now, you'll receive further details and a final bill from BT shortly"
If your wife wasn't told these things, complain to PO helpline, 08457 223344.Leilasmum0 -

The PO use a Sales Agency to sell it in some branches. The sales person is way out of order.Who knows how many other deals they have fiddled if that is the case.
Report them to Ofcom as well. See: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/landline/slamming/0
