    Hi Clare,

I am in a similar situation i started clearing out this week after lurking on the simplyfing life and the great de-clutter thread on here. I have taken a similar approach to others by doing little each day. This week i have taken 4 binbags to the tip, 4 to the charity shop and 1 bag of stuff to list on e-bay at the weekend. And that was just my daughters room (she is 12). It is hard to start but once you start you won't look back. Try to do a little each day and post what you've managed to clear on here.

Get selling some of the stuff your getting rid of on ebay or car boots, once all that extra cash comes flooding in that will soon motivate you to keep on decluttering!

It is hard though when you get to the stage where it's a huge job. I only live in a 1 bedroom flat and I wouldn't say I'm untidy or unorganised but sometimes I find the constant cleaning/decluttering/sorting/selling etc to much. God knows how people who've got kids and massive houses cope, I don't think I could!

Seriously though, sort some stuff out and get it on ebay, I've been doing that for a while now and the money soon adds up, maybe put that towards treating yourself to something nice that you need for the house, such as new bedcovers or curtains etc??

  • Thank you all so much for your tips, and more so your support in doing this. Sometimes I feel such a failure because I just an incapable of keeping my house tidy- everyone else I know seems to be able to do it. I do i know just need to be ruthless and get rid of stuff that has no purpose in my house and it isn't worth fall out with my oh about some old tat that just needs going. I have new gusto to put some stuff on ebay, freecycle and car boot. In fact going to freecycle some stuff now. thanks again xxx

I know exactly how you feel. I've been naturally messy my whole life, always promise to change and feel a failure when I don't...

  • i always pride myself that I am messy but not dirty, so at least the house is always clean (even if you can't see the clean bits for clutter!).

If you have a problem knowing what is in a cupboard when you have tidied away, why not put a list on the inside of the cupboard door of the contents. When we had the new kitchen fitted we had post-it notes on the Outside of the doors for about 3 weeks till we could remember what went where!

Another vote for FlyLady here! Building new habits one at a time and doing things in 15 minute chunks has really helped me. The place still isn't tidy, but I'm making progress.
