My House is a Pig Sty, Too Much Stuff, Where do I Start??

Well we hope to put the house on the market soon. I'm having any room that is a bit shabby decorated and it is starting to look really nice, apart from I have so much stuff the place is a pig sty!

I don't know where to start, as soon as I decide to throw something out I think that I might be able to ebay or car boot it so stuff just gets moved.

I need some advice on what to do!

I keep trying to think that we need to get rid of stuff to maximise space (and add value to the house) and also that it will be cheaper to move, however seven years and three kids worth of stuff is in the house and I am desperate.

I'm obviously a horder, in another pre children life we had a minimalist house, believe it or not and somehow that mind set has gone and we just have loads and loads of rubbish.

I have bags of childrens clothes and toys and because dd3 is so much younger than dd1 & 2 it seems stupid to get rid of stuff she could use but any advice would be appreciated.

If you're like me you'd never be bothered to ebay all of your stuff!

I would just go through a room at a time and take everything you don't want to a charity shop. If there are any expensive items try sticking an ad in the local paper or on gumtree.

personally i would start with your childrens clothes and get all winter clothes on ebay now.

unless you've got clothes with tags on or designer clothes, i would put a couple of trousers and a couple of tops together and get them on - even if they only get a pound or so, it's better than nothing

or if you have any car boots in your area, get down there next weekend (give yourself this weekend to sort things out) and sell, sell sell

if you're not motivated enough to make money - which you must be cos you're oh mse, then send it alll to charity

You could also freecycle anything that doesn't sell on ebay

Start with the messiest and sell, sell, sell. If not, get to that charity shop. They will love you for it. As for stuff for your youngest, I thought like that as I intend on having another one, but to be honest a lot of the stuff you will not use so be brutal, get rid of some and keep the rest!

Why not have a garage sale/yard sale - stick plenty of notices up in your area, and put a couple of tables out in the yard, and prepare to take people's money off them for walking away with your stuff - prevents all the hassle with dragging it to the car boot!
  • The way i have been working for preparation for moving is pick a particular room a day. Armed with loads of cardboard boxes, newspapers, and plastic crates, wrap and pack into the boxes any items to want to pack away to take to the new house (declutter for the sale and all that!).

Any items that you want to get rid of, if they are 'ebayable' take a picture there and then and put them into the plastic crates. When that crate is full get onto Turbolister and list it straight away. You can then store the crates until they items have sold and you can pack and post without having to hunt again.

If you don't think it will sell either take it to the charity shop/freecycle/dump what you dont want - but not without offering to family and friends first!

I found that this way has worked best for me, its amazing how quick you can get round it. I sold so much during August and September that I am struggling now and havent even added the October Ebay Challenge to my signature!
