EagerLearner - what are you putting in your Moroccan veg curry?
Hiya,
I put:
Chopped onion
Chopped garlic
Turmeric
Curry powder
Chick peas (tin)
Tomatoes (2 tins)
potatoes
Star Anise
Cinnamon
carrots
courgette
aubergine
dried apricots
raisins
some red wine if available
Chicken Thai curry is also cheap if you batch cook:
Chicken 1.99
Coconut milk 0.85
Sweet potatoes 0.60
Spices 0.08
courgettes, aubergine 1.00
Potatoes 0.20
4.72 = 8 portions
0.59 per portion (per person)MFW #185

Ooh, I'll join in this one! My partner and I really need to start some serious saving so anything that saves us some money is a bonus
Our favourite cheap meals include:
Home-made spag bol - half a pack of mince and loads of veggies gives us spag bol one day, lasagne the next and a two portions to freeze for either chilli (add some spices and beans), taco filling or cottage pie.
Pasta (got a massive £1 bag from Tesco), with a tin of tuna, some pesto and some parmesan.
Love making curries and things too, and you can't beat a home-made pizza!0 -
I'm in - was living with my bf, now back at home for final exam period  , moving out again soon into my own place where bf will be frequent (and then eventually permanent!) visitor. Plus I always double cook for me for freezer. And I'll be incredibly hard up so saving on food is always good.
My general cheap stable is soya mince (80p for a pack in Sainsbury's, does me about 10 portions, as it swells with water) + tinned toms + veg of choice. With spagetti it = spag bog. Add chilli powder and kidney beans to make it into chilli (I do this when I find reduced sour cream or natural yog to have with it), which can go on rice, spagetti, lentils etc. Or on top of jacket potato with cheese melted on - mmm. Turkey mince good for this too, as its cheap, and makes lovely cheesy meat balls (mince, cheese, breadcrumbs, into balls, into slow cooker with tom sauce - yum)
Cheap tuna again is fab - in pasta, on toast with tomato paste and cheese and tom chunks.
However, my problem is getting different and healthy foods - I eat loads of tomatos, but not enough fish as that's usually expensive, and things like spinach. When I've got the space/garden I'll grow my own expensive veggies but for now its mainly tinned toms, mushrooms, onions. And the OH, like Tam Lin, is a great big carnivore, whereas I eat some meats occasionally but prefer veggie food and really avoid cooking meat anyway as I'm paranoid!!
ETA - And that ^ was my 100th post, lol!Returning MoneySaver, now furiously saving for a house deposit...0 -
Hi there, i'm up for this (been doing something along these lines for a while now anyway) I live in a student house with my boyfriend and we used to spend over £40 a week/every couple of weeks in adsa, but we switched to a combination of Lidl and the local farmers market, and now we spend about £8 on all our veg and eggs, and £15-20 in lidl depending on offers/meat/cleaning products etc, and we get enough for about 15 meals.
So our average fortnightly shop now comes to about £25, and we eat HM meals
Some of our faves include roast dinner - whole large chicken only 2.95 in lidl, lasts another 3 meals at least - cold chicken and salad/veg/jacket potato, chicken stir fry/curry (leftover chicken, tinned toms, padded out with mushroom/veg), and chicken risotto.
We also get those big bags of asda/tesco pasta for £1 and stock up on tins of tomatoes in lidl to make spicy tomato pasta, cheesy tomato pasta, tomato and veg pasta bake, and also tuna and pasta with sweetcorn and white sauce (milk butter and cornflour)
Also make mince stretch by only using half a packet and padding out bolognese with veg, and HM burgers/meatballs with breadcrumbs and mushrooms.
Fave desserts are raspberry jelly, tinned/fresh fruit (usually half price in lidl ie. got a mango there for 44p - they're over a pound in tescos!!) and OH loves lidl chocolate digestive bicuits (much nicer than supermarket value makes, but just as cheap!)
I do my best to batch cook but we only have 1 freezer drawer and 1 fridge shelf for the 2 of us as we have to share with 4 other people so there isnt often room for lots of leftovers.Moneysavinghopeful :rotfl:0 -
Same here - we only have 1 freezer shelf so it's hard to batch cook that much - one day really aim to have a decent freezer - oh, the fun we'll have!
Will look into the soya mince as that sounds great!
Any other ideas?MFW #185

yeah my bf and i always talk about our 'fantasy' of having our own fridge freezer and putting stuff on every shelf, even if we only have a few things, just because we can!!!:rotfl:Moneysavinghopeful :rotfl:0 -
Soya mince - I use the 'Flavoured' soya from Holland and Barrett to bulk out meals.
Keep an eye on freecycle and dontdumpthat.com for freezers, I've seen quite a few offeredOne day I might be more organised...........

I was just the same lol - my partner and I lived in student halls before we got a flat together, and it's soooo nice to be able to put things on every shelf and not open the fridge and be confronted by something really horrible!0 -
Ah, to have a freezer is something I can only dream of - our compact kitchen is perfectly formed but won't allow another sausage!
I love your sig GingerNutmeg - feel the same myself ;o)MFW #185
