Cost it up against diy kitchens. I imagine they could be cheaper and there is no comparrison in the quality with the diy kitchens units and doors being far superior to that of Howdens. Ps everything else from diy kitchens will be loads better. eg worktops in carcass wirework etc0

Steve, can you tell me how to go about finding a good kitchen fitter in my area (Staffs/Cheshire border). OH is prepared to build the units and also do any prep & be an assistant if necessary, but he is not able to do a 'professional' job on the fitting side. I don't want to end up with a cowboy.:rotfl:
Cheers.:beer:Weight loss - here we go again - watch this space!
US...........And them............0 -

How big is the kitchen? It does sound a lot but the really bad thing about Howdens would be that your tradesperson probably does get an extra discount on that price himself but if you managed to buy it through Howdens yourself they'd probably charge the same.
Except the round cupboards cost an absolute bomb! They are really pretty but by the time you've bought rounded plinth to go underneath etc, they were coming out at something insane like £400 each unit for us which is a lot for a cupboard that doesn't hold much! Then you have to consider the extra cost of having worktops cut to measure which is costly if they are stone.
The kitchen is a collection of different pieces of furniture, each with a different price. The curves look gorgeous but I personally couldn't justify the price tag. I do go through the quotes and consider how I can do things more cheaply or get more storage from the same space.
I did get really frustrated with them and didn't buy kitchens from them for a long time but we seem now to put enough other joinery business through them that I feel we're getting proper trade prices on everything. We have the Glendevon Cream kitchen which is probably what you're buying and it didn't cost anywhere near that for a reasonable kitchen but I was possibly more stingy with my use of units in which case yours might not be that much of a kick in the teeth, especially with those curved units.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Yep. You can bet your bottom dollar that the price Howdens quote is well loaded up to include the backhander from the kitchen fitter. Know this from first hand experience on the isle of wight.0

Hi i work for magnet trade and we work exactly the same as howdens.
It makes me laugh how you are all talking about it like howdens are trying to rip you off....
If you are not trade then you shouldnt have got 80% off any way....that was a great deal even at trade...
Everything on your quote will have its own profit margin for howdens each item is different from the next hence why you have different % off each thing.
I very much doubt you will get a better deal unless of course you try Magnet trade ( remember trade not retail , there is 2 different sides to the business )
Go trade and get it cheaper .......its not rocket science....
Fact
Magnet carcases are all 15 years guarenteed
Howdens are 5 years guaranteed
Magnet supply Candy appliances as standard ( but can supply many more )
Howdens supply diplomat as standard ( ever heard of it...me neither )
You could walk away the same day with a kitchen as they are mostly in stock, if not it will be a week for delivery......not 6 weeks
Hope this helps0 -

As i said i work for magnet trade as a rep.....and a very good one i might add....we dont get backhanders or commision for that matter!!!!
We does everyone assume that we are trying to rip them off....
makes me angry !!!!!!!
What i suggest you do is go to a retail outlet and get the same kitchen quoted high gloss cream with curved corners fitted.....i very much doubt that it will even touch the howdens quote.....4k fitted is a good deal....very good..
Take my advice ( for god sakes i should be putting you off i do work for the comp lol ) Its a fantastic price i would snap it up !!!
I doubt that i would get it much cheaper0 -
Go to Ikea....mine lots and lots of cupboards for less than £2000.(I went for boring doors - with small children high gloss isn't a good idea).
My dad was going to Magnet until he saw my kitchen...
And is someone really boasting Magnet provide Candy(!) appliances.rather than Diplomat - I wouldn't be proud of that....Ikea do Whirlpool but I went for Bosch..
And Ikea give a 25 year guarantee on their units...
And the orignal poster said £4000 supply - not fitted...0 -
Yeah I agree about back handers to Howdens person who authorises a quote for me for almost £6k and then provides all the items to the fitter at £4k, so I pay the trader the £6k and he pays Howden £4k - now to me that is a scam and it explains why the cowboy builder will not give me the invoice, which is my warranty, and the Howdens Manager would not speak to me and refused point blank to help when I told him i needed items replacing - its only been four months - The trader deals with this branch regularly so it it honest for Howdens to provide grossly marked up quotes for traders to then invoice them for 33% less. I got the invoice sent to me so have it all here to see what Trading Standards and Consumer Rights say. Howdens will be asked to confirm they approve this.0

Jillytb, it's called business! As a business/tradesman you buy for £x and sell for £x+some profit. Howdens shouldn't have told you what the trader paid really - the problem is that being greedy for business they will trade with anyone regardless of their bona-fide "business" status and this muddies the whole trade price vs end-user price situation. If I have materials delivered directly to site then I make damn sure that there won't be an invoice going with them - it's non of the customers concern what I paid for them, only what he's happy to pay me for them.
I get different discounts from the various wholesalers I use - the ones I use most give me the biggest discounts (that's how they get my loyalty in a competitive market), but they wouldn't give anything like that price to you if you walked in off the street. Howdens have made a rod for their own back by offering these "discounts" to every Tom, !!!!!! and Harriet, regardless of whether they are true business or DIYer or chancer.
What profit you get away with is all down to what your customer will pay - until you found out about this, did you think that what you paid was OK? Are you going ask Tescos what they paid for the 2 pints of milk you bought yesterday, then say you're being ripped off when you find out it was 20p but they charged you 85p!!0
