I don't know where it says it will automatically renew ether i just found out after the first year.

If you check your renewal letter it will tell you what to do next. You didnt do it. Its not hidden away. The renewal letter is normally only one or two pages and a very quick read.

Errrrrrrr, if they auto renew, they'll take payment from a credit card if that was the payment method!

by the way i did all this over the internet i have not signed anything

Thats irrelevant. You agreed to the contract. If you had an accident and called your insurer would it be acceptable for them to turn round and say "You set it up online so you didn't sign anything so we aren't going to pay out"? Of course not. The terms are set out pretty clearly and the renewal letter again makes it clear what is required of you.

Pay the money before it gets passed to a debt collector and just accept you made a mistake and learn for next year.

OP, what were the relevant dates? did your new policy start on the same day as your old policy renewed, or was there a gap?

The Post office, the latest insurer of the OP also does this, so he / she needs to watch out next year.

I have never been comfortable with the concept of auto-renewal which seems to be more prevalent these days.

What if the renewal letter goes missing in the post, or you are away on holiday, or you are rushed into hospital for several weeks and cannot deal with your post? By the time you get out, it's a done deal and you've had no say about it.

I really think this type of transaction should be outlawed. Wherever paying out money is concerned, the customer should always be in full control.

yes - we were caught out the other way round - we thought the insurance had been renewed automatically and it wasn't - even though the renewal letter said do nothing and we will automatically renew - it pays to check!!

By the time you get out, it's a done deal and you've had no say about it.

Being harsh, you've had the contract up front, you should check it and at that point you have the choice as to whether to agree to it or not.

But, I did check my paperwork last night and I can assure you that it was quite difficult to find even when I was looking for it.
I think there was one sentence at the back of my policy book that says they "might" automatically renew it.
I will pro-actively check myself because I know about this, but I would certainly agree with those who say it isn't always clear.

If it wasn't auto-renewed you would not have any cover in place - which would often result in you breaking the law.

The customer still has full control. You can ask them not to auto-renew your policy if you don't want them to.
