The BEST costumes ever are over in the US - they have everything you can think of. Go over to eBay.com and have a look. We have had a purple dragon, red dragon and ladybird. They are fleecy, have hoods and you just wear them over your clothes. I got quite a few and was selling them on eBay and they were going for up to £25 as their is nothing in the UK like it. Last year I got a red dragon like this

for £10 including the postage!! The worst thing was trying to get her into it and then trying to get her out of it as she thought it was an 'everyday' coat. Bless. my son was dressed up as a ladybird which reminds me, I must dig out to flog on eBay!! If they say they won't ship to the UK then ask - I always do. get them to cram it into as small a box/packet as possible to save on the shipping costs. Make it look like you know what you are talking about and they won't rip you off on postage!! If you get them now you have plenty of time for it to get here before halloween. Make sure you get the sender to quote it as being worth less than $10 so you do not get charged duty when it comes in.0 -
I bought a basic witches outfit from Wilkinson for DD age 4. It came with a horrid plastic cape so we made our own.
I rummaged in a charity bag for a discarded black waist slip. Opened up one seam and we then set about painting it - ordinary metallic colour paints did the trick, not special fabric paints. 6 years on it's still being used and looks great.
Don't forget temporary hair colours. Usually at least £2 in Wilko's and double that in Boots. Savers have a great range though for 89p. Shop early for the green colour.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

What ever happened to making your own costumes?
when i was little (im not even that old now) me and my friends used to spend the week before halloween making our own costumes out of black bags and silver foil then had bits of mams makeup to put scary face on, occasionally we had dracula teeth or witches hat bought but i can remember spending ages cutting out spooky shapes from foil to stick on black bin liner, i can even remember me mam making me brother a dracula cloak from an old curtain.0 -

Hehehe - someone after my own heart
Anyone making their own ghoulies out of old sheets ... don't throw them away afterwards ... put them away for next year! (You can nab old sheets/tablecloths/curtains from charity shops 50p a time)
Make iced hands for your punch bowl from an old rubber glove (fill with water, freeze; take off the rubber glove and put the "hand" into your jug/punch bowl) Cost: nil
Oops!Sorry - forgot we're not in OS

We always had a fancy dress competition at Guides. I remember one year, the winner came as a mummy. Her costume consisted of just white toilet roll!
Not so good if you're likely to get wet though...
I won it one year with a witch costume made from an old sheet that my mum had helped me dye black. (Actually it came out dark grey but in fact I thought that looked really good!) Most people were in costumes made from bin liners so this was really quite sophisiticated!0
