Er how can what weegie.geek said be true about automated apps as I thought the image verification put a nail in that coffin

    :confused::confused:

Lots of automated forum spam bots use some algorithms based on OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to automatically work out the letters/numbers/phrase in the 'image verification'.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha#Circumvention

Plus there are some even more sophisticated approaches.

They're getting really clever about getting round captchas.

    The most clever recent one:
    1. spambot fills out form on its targeted site and finds a Captcha image that needs to be solved to allow access.
    2. spambot copies Captcha image and shows it on an adult website controlled by the spammer
    3. Human user who wants to get access to adult site solves the Captcha.
    4. Spambot grabs the result and goes back to target site and fill in the answer
So the spambot gets a human to unwittingly solve the Captcha.

There are some less sophisticated approaches too, like paying someone in Mumbai to manually confirm the catchpas for you. :)
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Today is a prime example of why we do need more Boardguides.

The current BG's cannot be expected to be online all the time, but the amount of spam and threads posted in the wrong place is getting silly.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Funny thing is,the other morning I was chasing spammers around the board whilst the board guide was looking at another thread.

Amazingly the spammers post was still there an 1 hour later.

I understand it is voluntarily but then to volunteer and not do the job?

But one of the reasons we were given the job in the first place is because we're also regular users who have interests on MSE beyond the BGing

This very moment is a good example. I'm just about to go and get myself something to eat, but because I'm a bit addicted to MSE I clicked on the bookmark to have a very quick look at all threads I'm subscribed to just to see if anyone's replied to a post I'm interested in.

I'm subscribed to this post so I read it and am replying.

And now because my tummy's really growling I have to go. Just because the green light is by my name doesn't mean I've got my Board Guide hat on and have read every post on my boards before I'm allowed to leave this chair!

    :)
  • So would having extra board guides help you out.Are you the only looking after this section, how many board guides are there in total considering there are 273,215 users registered.:)

I think thats an appalling thing to say!!!!
The board guides put in loads of their own time and effort to keep this site running and the site has saved people thousands!!!
Afterall you dont have to read or respond to the spam do you!!!
Board guides are entitled to a life!!
Some people are just never satisfied!!
