Low energy Halogen light bulbs

  • I promise not to advertise but our response was to this post below by another user. They made reference to a link to our site, stating they wanted a fitting where they could use low energy bulbs so that they sit flush.

"Much as I'd like a lighting fitting which takes the low energy bulbs on
    http://www.energybulbs.co.uk/acatalo...U10_Bulbs.html

the light fittings sold come with standard bulbs. The low energy GU10's are longer, don't come with a decorative exterior and look ugly when used in place of standard bulbs."

If I had phrased it as I have seen these fittments for sale at http://www.energybulbs.co.uk/acatalog/Megaman_Max_Downlights__Special_Offer___Special_Offer______span____.html

which answered there question and provided them with an answer is that still against policies ? I am confused by the fact this is a fairly unique product and just saying that you can get them but not telling them where, would seem a bit pointless to the member. Many of the posts on here contain links to very specific products on peoples sites. This site itself states if you have an interest you have to declare it so thats what we did.

Not trying to be akward but we have a qenuine interest in promoting energy saving lighting and are linked to the energy saving trust. Anything that takes away a negative aspect of why people should not switch to low energy bulbs seems beneficial.

We did not put some random post asking people to visit our site but a genuine answer to a specific problem posed by a member

Whatever the problems with alleged advertising, I repeat: low energy light bulbs can be found wherever, but designer light fittings are NOT designed for them - or at least not at an affordable price. When will designers recognise that we WANT to go low energy?

As an example, look at florescent. Seen any good light fittings for those? They're rubbish!

The best place to look for designer fittings is some where such as http://www.fozzlighting.co.uk/

They are very high quality, but I do agree not the cheapest
  • Aaarrrggghhh

Have read through the entire thread and don't know what I should do.

We have just installed a three bulbed ceiling spotlight in our bedroom which at present has 3 x 50w halogen GU10 bulbs in it.

It gets too hot and is going to cost far too much money so I want them replaced.

Should I get energy saving bulbs or LED's?

If LED's are suggested then what output and colour should I get?

I like the glow that the current spots give off.

Don't advise me to read through the threade, I have done and just want an honest piece of advice/opinion.

Well the first bit of advice is not to post in bright red - it hurts the eyes. ;)

You are not going to get the same beam pattern nor equivalent brightness from either compact fluorescents (which you mean by "energy saving bulbs") or from LEDs, so if you really want that level of light, you're stuck with what you've got.

For LEDs, if you want a focussed beam, go for one with a single high power LED. Multiple LEDs have a very wide beam.

Compact fluorescents may take a fraction of a second to come on, and some time to reach full brightness.

We can't advise you on the colour as it's personal preference. Halogen will be somewhere in between warm white and cool white. You will know what cool white LEDs look like - they are in all the white LED Christmas lights.

It sounds like you should visit a specialist lighting shop and look at what's on offer.

Expect to pay a lot more for the lamps than you paid for the fitting.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

Ouch that hurts the red fonts

We use this as a direct replacement

    http://www.megamanuk.com/products/product.php?sid=2

They are very bright and only take a few secs for full brightness, there is a slight blue tinge sort of clinical light but you do get used to it

Maybe I shouldn't assume that everyone is visually impaired like me (or maybe others shouldn't assume that we all have good vision).

I am not after the same level of brightness, obviously we want to be able to have good light in the bedroom but we are not after the 'perfect' match,

Could someone please explain 'same beam pattern' please?

I assume you mean the number of beams in the bulb?

Priot to fitting the new ceiling light, we used CFL's and do know that they need to 'warm up'.

We have LED pushlights under a shelf in our bedroom so I am aware of the colour of them.

So what colour LED's are nearest to the halogen, then?

Not possible in this neck of the woods.

I know that it is going to cost to replace the bulbs and that they are not cheap but they will pay for themselves anyway, so that's not a problem.

Maybe I didn't word my post very well as I obviously seem to know more than I first led you to believe - sorry about that.

I mainly want to know what would be good for a bedroom. CFL's or LED's nad if LED's, what kind as I have seen them with varying amounts of bulbs in them.

Do the CFL's fit into the ceiling lights ok or do they stick out noticeably?

Snapelover the gu10's we have are used in my daughters bedroom its a boxed room and its very bright in there mind you walls are bright pink. They are 4 of them so its sufficient for even a large room. The protrude a little more than normal gu10's but not much I like the megaman range because they protrude less than most other bulbs I seen apart from the normal gu10's

Sooner or later someone will ask this, so it might as well be me.

If you are visually impaired, and that is the reason you posted in red, why are none of your other 211 posts in red ?

Thats a good point. Also it doesn't alter the fact that others post in black so if you are visual impared why its only going to be good for you in your own posts and not others

I did the red font to brighten up my day and not because of my visual impairment. The red font doesn't hurt my eyes - that was my point.. If you refer back to post 45 you'll find it wasn't me who was complaining about the colour in the first place.

Anyway, back to the thread. We have decided on the Megaman low energy GU10 11w reflector bulbs.
The cheapest place to get them is???
