Low energy Halogen light bulbs

When I had my kitchen made over last year, I inadvertantly bought a swanky new light which uses 4 halogen light bulbs.
They look great and illuminate every corner of the kitchen, but aside from them being very hot to stand under, they blow every 5 minutes and use tons of energy.
I heard you can get 'green' ones based on LEDs.
Does anyone know about these, and where I can get some?
(I'm also looking for a refridgerator plug - see seperate thread!)

Would this be the kind of thing you are after??0

Are they the 12v type? Try an Ebay search for "MR16 LED"
The ones below look closest to the old halogen ones in my light fitting.

I bought one of the "savaplug" energy saving fridge plugs off Ebay. My fridge works exactly the same as before but it's a matter of faith as to whether there are any energy savings."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
I doubt they are the 12V type because the fittings cost more to manufacture (needing a transformer) and you'll get the cheapest unless you ask for better.
However, there's an interesting development on the 12V types - you can now get Luxeon devices for a reasonable price. These contain one very high brightness LED instead of many less bright ones, and so should give a better beam pattern. I am tempted to buy a bunch here. Note that some goon on eBay is doing the same "deal" for £15 more.

hope this information is useful, but remember these bulbs won't one for one give as much light as originals, so more light bulbs may be required.

I think I know what you're looking for. The Green Shop sell them. If the description below (taken from their site) matches what you're after, then this is the link: https://www.greenshop.co.uk/acatalog/Low_Energy_Light_Bulbs.html
If they are the right ones please let me know how you get on with them - I bought a house a year ago that came with fittings in the kitchen and bathroom for 13 (yes, THIRTEEN!) halogen bulbs. 4 have gone already and I would love to know if the low energy ones are any good so I can decide whether to invest in bulbs or new light fittings.
Thanks.
Energy Saving LED GU10 Spot Light
Amazing energy saving and long life from these LED bulbs. Rated at just 2.2W (as opposed to 50W for GU10 halogen bulbs) and 50,000 hours, they'll last as long as 25 conventional halogen bulbs.
On the downside they have a whiter light and are not as bright as halogen spot lights. However with 21 bright white LEDS they are extremely bright for LED lights. Ideally suited to application where the light has to be left on for extended periods.
12volt GU10 spot lights also available email enquires@greenshop.co.uk for details
Price: £8.95 Including VAT at 17.5%0 -
I don't think you can do better than actually try one out yourself. If you go to an electrical wholesaler like TLC (which is on the web) then you can avoid postage charges on a small order.
I don't think these will be even as bright as a 20W halogen, let alone a 50W, but it sounds as though there were far too many fittings anyway, so there will probably still be enough light.
I've now ordered the Luxeon 12V halogen replacements which I talked about in my previous posting.

Well the Luxeon lamps arrived today - very quick. They seem rather good. Initial observation is that, while they are not as bright as a 20W halogen, they are not far off. They get a bit warm but of course nothing like as hot as the equivalent halogen lamp, because they are consuming 3W rather than 20W for nearly as much light out.
The light is also a lot bluer than from a halogen bulb, so not a good idea to mix them in the same set of fittings.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
bought the same ones as gromituk, followed his link. Very pleased with lights. thanks for the advice. for anyone else this is the site: http://www.initiallights.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=710

Glad to be of service :j Now remember that these will continue to get cheaper, but you have been benefitting from them in the mean time.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

I would advise against the LED one's as I've used them personally and everyone complains about them causing headaches.
A company called megaman do an energy saving gu10 tube light, similar to a conventional energy saving bulb.Fear is the mind killer, I shall face my fears and they shall pass through me.0
