Ever since i inherited this pc i've had hassle with trojans/virus's/adware etc Now i've lost some registry files.If i get a w2000disc from somewhere?can i overwrite the existing info? and will it replace the registry?. Could i overwrite 2000 with xp instead? Any advice please??

If you have to buy a new disk, I would personally buy XP as I think it is much better than win 2k.

if i was you i'd reinstall completely. If the machine can hack it take it to xp then get it patched up and protected with:
- firewall unless you have a router with built in firewall, kerio is a good choice
- anti virus - grisoft avg offer a free edition
- spyware - spybot, adaware etc..ummm...0 -
I would definately go for XP if you can afford it and the PC will run it (If it already has 2000 on, you should be OK)
As Ge33a says, it is also very important to get Antivirus and Firewall software on as a matter of urgency once XP is up and running, not to mention all the service packs and security updates from the Microsoft website (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Excellent *FREE* antivirus and firewall software can be downloaded from here;
https://www.avast.com (You need to register this, but it is free)
https://www.sygate.com (you can download the home edition for free)
Although these are free downloads, they definately come with the cHEM seal of approval, and are far superior to expensive memory guzzlers such as Norton's offerings.

yeh when u run xp setup just format your c drive, and that will wipe it in preparation for xp. be aware you will loose all data on that drive.ummm...0

Just remember to back up a few important things if necessary, such as..
Internet Favourites/Bookmarks
Anything under My Documents
Any important emails (containing, for example, registration keys or passwords)
Else you'll be :mad: ...

it will ask you in the xp setup process, one of the first things it will ask, be sure you read each step and dont just press "next" "next" "next"...ummm...0

once you've installed XP change the desktop theme to Windows Classic and everything else to classic as well to get rid of that awful XP tin pot my first computer tomy toys front end that XP comes with0
