Central heating

The old age problem. Is it more economical to keep the central heating on all day say at 60F or have it on for short sharp bursts say breakfast, lunchtime and in the evening? We are in the house most of the day except for shopping and perhaps a walk.
Has anyone any ideas. ???
Thanks

depends on the size of the house and how well insulated it is and also how effective your thermostat is.
I turn off the heating (radiators) in the rooms that i don't use regularly and in the rooms the benefit from other heat sources such as the kitchen and the hall.
keep the doors shut where possible to prevent heat escaping.
I try to limit the amount of time that i have the heating on during the day as I find that it dries the air so much and I like having fresh air and having at least the kitchen window open, so I just wear an extra layer in the house. However a poorly pensioner living with me at the moment is prompting the heating to go on earlier and earlier each day
in short - my gut reaction is that if you only have a small house and only use a few rooms, heat as you need. if you have a large fuel efficient house that is all in constant use all day, it might be more effective to have low background heat on for most of the day.Blah0 -
I must admit, for the last week i've had my heating on all day every day ! .................not very money saving i know but it's sooooooooo cold0

i'm at home today, but heating only comes on at 4:30, when we usually get in, goes off at 9pm when kids in bed, and on in morning at 5:30-6:3-, just to get everywhere warm for getting up. is on the same at w/ends when we are home, kids always told, if your cold, eother go and do something to make tyou warm, or put a jumper on.0

I couldn't stand the house warm all day. I prefer it cooler in the mornings so you can whizz through your jobs without getting too hot. Heating goes off a 7am and doesn't come back on till 2pm.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

yeah, i hate it hot when i'm doing housework too. you just get too hot, and give up. i like all windows open for half hour a day, even in winter to let the fresh air in too.0

Do you seriously all have your heating on at the moment? But it's not cold yet. A little chilly in the evenings maybe but nothing a snuggle under a blanket cant handle.
Or am I just tight?

I agree ... I've only had a "test run" so far, to see if all radiators are working OK. The only time I've felt a little chilly is at night watching TV, but I just wrap up. Although I'm at home most of the day, I keep busy and like windows open to let in fresh air. I rarely put the heating on 'til November, but then there are no kids in the house.
This is NOT cold ... temperatures are way above freezing!! Wait 'til winter REALLY sets in (and I've just seen on the news that they've given out one of the coldest winters yet!). Be prepared peeps ....
