We are on a family challenge of not switching on the central heating until November.

So far so good, especially as we have a very nice fuel-efficient stove that burns just about anything and does not give off smoke. So we have been burning odd bits of wood and small logs in the colder evening.

For me it was a right challenge in these last few days as I have been quite ill with a nasty cold. Still, I managed by staying in bed a lot, drinking lots of hot tea with honey and lemon and covering up well when up and about.

It can be done, especially as we live in London! It is going to be ever so much easier in the next week or so as we are travelling to Italy for the half term week YIPPEE!!!

So now you know why I will disappear for a little while!

    Ciao all

lovely british gas man came and fixed my boiler, but the kids only said they were cold when he turned up and realised the heating was broke. so have set it for an hour later to see what happens.

Hope you have a great time caterina  :)
    Thank you Sheel!

Dear OldStylers: I have a confession to make. As the saying goes, pride comes before the fall or whatever the saying says....(sorry, me foreigner hehehe)

After boasting of our no-central-heating-until-November challenge yesterday evening, my daughter asked whether we could have the central heating on, I said 'No, you should just put a warm jumper and another quilt on your bed'.

Of course then I remembered that there is a hole in the wall under her floorboard and that really chills her room, poor girl. We keep meaning to have it fixed but always something else happens and we haven't got around to doing it yet.

So, last night, we had the central heating on for 2 hours.

    End of challenge *sigh*

But I just could not think of the poor little girl freezing in her room....

That reminds me: I know it's the wrong time of year to say it, but if you turn your central heating off for the summer, then my nice repairman told me it's a good idea to run the pump for about 10-20 mins every month to prevent the fine rust and gunk from settling out of the water. (No need to turn on the boiler.)

Otherwise when you turn on the heating again when the weather gets cold, the pump gets a big gobful of gunk and chokes.

I turn off the heating (radiators) in the rooms that i don't use regularly and in the rooms the benefit from other heat sources such as the kitchen and the hall.

I turned off the heating in my hall, and couldn't work out why my bills went up. Then realized that the thermostat was in the hall, and so now all the other rooms were being heated continually - felt such a dope!
