EDM347 DEBT: NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN CAMPAIGN16.06.2005
Flello, Robert
That this House is greatly concerned that specialist children's TV channels are screening advertisements from secured loan companies, which aim to persuade the generally less well-off to take out loans using `pester power' by the young people watching those channels; commends the Debt: Not in Front of the Children campaign by the consumer finance website moneysavingsexpert.com, which is calling for specialist TV channels to withdraw immediately those advertisements and supports its petition against such advertisements that have resulted in one in three children pressuring their parents by repeating slogans from TV loan advertisements, and one in 10 pestering their parents to take out such loans.

Fill in the boxes and it sends a fax to your MP (it knows who it is from your postcode). This really does work as I've used it before and got a reply from my MP.
Note the site guidelines when using it, e.g. be polite, etc.
Doesn't need to be a long message, just draw their attention to the EDM. For example:
Dear xxx,
I would like to bring your attention to an early day motion - referenced EDM347 DEBT: NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN.
This motion is concerned with the amount of advertising on specialist children's TV channels from secured loan companies and I have put the text of the motion below for your information.
Text of EDM: "That this House is greatly concerned that specialist children's TV channels are screening advertisements from secured loan companies, which aim to persuade the generally less well-off to take out loans using `pester power' by the young people watching those channels; commends the Debt: Not in Front of the Children campaign by the consumer finance website moneysavingsexpert.com, which is calling for specialist TV channels to withdraw immediately those advertisements and supports its petition against such advertisements that have resulted in one in three children pressuring their parents by repeating slogans from TV loan advertisements, and one in 10 pestering their parents to take out such loans."
As a father of two, I recognise this as a genuine issue which I believe it is important for you to support and I hope you feel able to do so.
Yours sincerely,

me too thansk for that.
If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. I'm struggling to follow my own advice today, so please do NOT refer me to it, or I can't be held responsible for my response. Thanking you. Bambino due 25/12/09.
Thank you for your letter of 7 July. I rather agree with you that there is some advertising, especially on some children's channels, which is greatly to be deplored.
I'll certainly look at this EDM with a view to signing it, but as a shadow minister I am discouraged from signing EDMs save in exceptional circumstances, but I shall make sure I have a word behind the scenes with Government Ministers about this important issue. I, like you, am a father of two.
Well I've tried to find out for myself but gone round and round till I ended with a thread that no longer exists..................................so I better just ask.
Has there been any further on the letter to the tv companies or the early day motion

As an MP he should do what his constituents want
Competitions - See it, search it, post it, simples
Now retired from posting comps and reporting bad posts.
Would be interesting to know what response if any was recieved from the TV companies..................surely they should of responded by now or a prod may be necessary
Had a nice postcard through the post from Mr Clarke today, thanking me for my letter to which he will be responding as soon as possible (OOO! get him!)
It is nice to note that there is at least one signatory to the EDM from every political party in the House (except Sinn Fein who don't participate in Parliamentary business).
I've had a reply (the second in fact) from Ken Clarke today. He wrote to Tessa Jowell who has responded basically saying it has nothing to do with the government and we should approach the Advertising Standards Agency. That is the oversimplified version, but I figured noone would want to read the whole thing word for word. Sadly, reading her letter, which he has enclosed, it says that the broadcasters can decided on the suitability of an ad and the ASA will only deal with specific advert complaints.

I wrote to the ASA and complained about this and they replied "that there was no evidence that it was harmful to children" well I THINK THEY ARE WRONG!!!!!
Laters peeps
