Don't miss out on your winter fuel payment

What's it about?

Winter may seem a long way off yet but if you're over 60 it's vital you send your form off soon if you want to receive your winter fuel payment in time for Xmas.

What to do

Those who've received it before or are on a state pension or other social security benefit need do nothing, you'll get it automatically.

If you haven't, though, you have until Friday 21 Sept to apply if you want your £200 (£300 if you're over 80) before Xmas.

If you haven't received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or don't receive one of the eligible social security benefits in the qualifying week (17-23 Sept 2007) you'll need to claim.

The deadline for all claims for Winter Fuel Payment in 2007/08 is 30 March 2008 but you'll most likely get the money after Christmas if you apply after 21 Sep 07.

For more info on how to claim, visit the Pension Services website

It's confusing as to whether I qualify for this benefit. I am a 60 year old male, who is retired and receiving no state benefits. Should I claim or do I have to wait until I am 65?
  • Its available to anyone over 60 regardless of your income.

I can confirm this. It's not means-tested. The Queen probably gets it.

If there are 2 of you then you get £100 each. It usually drops into our bank accounts mid-to-late November.

Word of warning to anyone who has chosen to defer receiving their pension. They do not automatically receive it - the first year this happened to me, it took me until JUNE the following year before I finally got it. Then I was assured that the following year all would be well. No chance, I had to go through the same routine all over again. I did get it a bit quicker - February I think this time. But don't overlook it.

Is Friday 21st Sept. the cut off date?
I know someone who`s 60 the following week.
Does this mean she won`t get it this winter?
Surely it should just be paid the day you reach 60.

Although a few more years for me to qualify I was trying to find out the answer to this. If 60 and with no benefits do you have to claim and if you do not use the internet how would you even know about it?
  • For this year you must be 60 or over on or before the 24th September. See the pensions service website for more info.

With all benefits, the Government budgets on the assumption that there will be a significant number of pensioners who are too senile, too lazy or too stupid to make a claim.

The 10% band of income tax is a classic example.

Where did you get this from? Please post the exact link.
The leaflet I have just accessed is titled 2006/2007, I think that is last year's leaflet, but I could be wrong.
