If you are on means tested benefits, then if you do not intend to give it straight back, you have to declare it. If you do not, you are committing benefit fraud also.

definatly definatly call the bank and get this sorted asap. It sounds like a big mistakes been made and to see that amount of money in your account must be tempting, but until you find out otherwise, it's not yours to spend.
Look on the brightside, it'll be your good deed of the day and what goes around comes around...
but before you do the honest thing, keep the balance receipt and frame it!! lol...not a lot of folk can say they had 40 grand floating about ;)

I think the poster is looking permission to spend it. The poster knows it is not his and as such should advise the bank and leave the money where it is.
What ever happens please do not transfer to a high interest rate savings account because if this is found out by the Benefits Agency you will certainly be a big trouble and no doubt lose your limited income.

Did you pay in £40 into your account because maybe the cashier simply typed in the wrong amount? They won'tknow until they balance their till and then PANIC! They'll realise their error and correct it if that is the case.

Ring the bank and ask them about the entries into your account.

Agreed with Mable, sounds very much like OP wants someone to come on here and say "It's OK, they can't blame you for spending it, it won't hurt anyone."

Well, sorry, but it's not the case. That money's not yours, you know it's not yours. Phone the bank immediately and tell them what's happened, and get it sorted honestly.

It's quite possible that they've made a transfer into the wrong account and that £40k is someone elses'. How would you feel if you were on the other end and someone else was spending your money?
