Sky Broadband Fix

The problem usually, is: the wireless signal says it is still connected, and normally with a very good connection but you cannot access any sites. When you look into the wireless connection the speed has dropped down to 1meg, but you cannot ping the router - This is a known issue with the SKy netgear router. The only resolution is to reboot the router, then it'll work for between 5 and twenty minutes before you need to reboot again. The DSL connection remains fine through all this and if you connect to the router using an ethernet cable, you would never know there was a problem!!!
People are using their own routers on SKY and as yet SKY are not enforcing this, but sky can easily see if the supplied router is being used or not and disable the connection.
The main raeson they want everyone to use the same router is so the monkeys on the helpdesk all repeat from the same script while scratching their $%£"s, (there are certain network benefits too if everyone uses the same router but thats another story!).
The monkeys on the helpdesk insisted that each of the five different wireless adaptors I was using to connect to their router were faulty
and that I should buy their wireless adaptor as that will work!!!
Funny how my notebook worked fine at my mates house on his sky router (which doesn't have a problem!!!) but he got the same issue connecting to my router!!!
Still.......

ah... you must have spoken to the same people as me at their 'helpdesk'!!!
yes, all sounds very familiar except that when i connected via the cable as requested by the 'helpdesk' i encountered the same problems with the connection dropping only less frequently and it never got to the point of having to reset the router which i constantly have to do when connecting wirelessly. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
I disabled the wireless on the netgear router, used the yellow ethernet cable to connect the netgear router to my own router, and used the wireless on my router, perfect 100% connection and no need for daily (hourly) resets!!

i am on my second sky router and still have the first one (the two both had exactly the same problems)
would i be able to flash the firmware on this so that it would act as an out of the box netgear router instead of a sky router and then use it as suggested?
i presume it is just a Netgear DG834GT with sky firmware, no? and that the netgear firmware is good, no?The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
These symptoms are confusing if you are getting drops when wired, that can't be a wireless problem, to prove whether it is a wireless drop or a connection drop, ping the router the next time it drops, or ping it continuously, and wait for it to fail, then check the pings.
start, run, cmd
ping -t 192.168.0.1Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
to be honest i have not connected the second router through the ethernet cable so don't know if that was only a fault in the first one. they have all the same wireless problems tho.
will try out the pinging thing tomorrow night - on my pda just now.
i used the netstumbler this morning. what sort of figure am i looking for in the signal/noise graph? one of the neighbours signals was around the 70-80 mark, mine was about 60-65.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
i have found this :
Guide to flashing from Sky Firmware to Netgear Firmware
might give it a go with the first router tomorrow. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
I had all those problems with the sky provided router. I just replaced it with a billion router and have had no disconnections since .0

Just a thought before you start flashing your router, what are your router stats like?
I used to have regular dropouts before I sorted out my internal phone wiring.
Check yours with the router plugged into your Master test socket (under the faceplate).

Ok,
my connection just died. got the 'little or no conectivity' error message. normally i have have to reset the router to fix this.
I started netstumbler which was still reporting a signal as before.
on doing the ping -t thing, i was geting destination host unreachable.
tried a repair. did not work, got to renewing ip address.
then about a minute later it reconnected itself.

have now undone the wring in my sockets. all six terminals were wired in both sockets.
In router stats i am getting the following results.
ADSL Link
conection speed 1536kbps
attenuation 59.0 db
noise 19.7 db
on netstumbler my SNR is around 37 since i angled my antenna on the routerThe difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0
