hiya,
i keep having to repair my wireless connection to my sky broadband router.
i was told 'off the record' by one their tech support guys (tier 3) that the routers were rubbish and that i should try buying a 'decent one' as this would probably fix the problem.
has anyone having the same problems selved it by getting anew router?
i have my mac code, just thought i'd try to fix it before giving up the cheap broadband and going back to BT.

Try turning off Upnp (a known Bug)and also try using a different channel, worked for me.

Username admin, Password sky
BTW You cannot use another type of router with Sky broadband without breaking your T&Cs.
Unofficially it is possible to extract your username and Password from the Sky router, and using an alternative.
A utility like Mosseywell's bounce router will do this:http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/technical-discussion/6402-new-monitor-tool-reboot-router-automatically.htmlThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
If it is a netgear router, they aren't rubbish, there is no reason to get a new router, and there is no reason to change isp because the isp is nothing to do with the connection between your pc and router.
are you using windows to manage wireless, or a proprietary piece of software (belkin etc) that came with your wireless card/stick?
have you tried changing channels? Is it encrypted? Do the neighbours have wireless? You need to choose a channel as far away from them as possible, preferably with a 5 channel gap. e.g. 1, 6, 11

i am using windows to manage the connection because the software that came with teh adapter (speedtouch 121g) does not have repair as an option. i have since found out that there are two versions of the adapter but both are identicle in appearance and require a different driver. i am unsure if i am using the correct driver.
i have tried a few channels but its no better, currently set ot channel 6.
i have changed the mode in wireless settings to 'auto 108mps' and it seems to be more stable. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
Disabling UPNP doesn't always work, and SKY cust service won't readily admit that there's a known issue with the firmware they have put on these routers, in fact, they will try to tell you it is your wireless adaptor that is at fault and that you need to buy their adaptor. The netgear routers are at fault make no mistake!!!!
As suggested above, get your username and password from the router using the hack and setup your own, or, do what I did: I disabled the wireless on the netgear router, used the yellow ethernet cable to connect the netgear router to my own router, and used the wireless on my router, perfect 100% connection and no need for daily (hourly) resets!!

how do they know you are not using their router? what would they do about it? why do they restrict use to thier router?or, do what I did: I disabled the wireless on the netgear router, used the yellow ethernet cable to connect the netgear router to my own router, and used the wireless on my router, perfect 100% connection and no need for daily (hourly) resets!!
might try that. any suggestions for a reasonably cheap router to use?
now that sounds like a plausable solution. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
When it drops, and you have to do a repair, does your wireless icon get a red cross through it? Can you ping 192.168.0.1? Have you set your wireless to autoconnect to your ssid when in range, and to only connect to infrastructure networks?
Or, are you having problems surfing, so try the repair.
People do use this kit on Sky without any problems, so I am sceptical about this generic firmware fault that people keep blaming the issue on. There is a lot of wireless kit out there, using the 2.4Ghz spectrum, and they interfere with each other, whatever equipment you have.

no, it usually looks as normal for connected, only there is no activity when you are trying to do anything, such as load a webpage, eventually get 'internet explorer could not display this page...' but icon still shows as connected, just doesn't go green. most of the time it will repair, sometimes get error saying 'wireless network has little or no connectivity...' but can still see the router thorugh view wireless networks, excellent signal. When it drops, and you have to do a repair, does your wireless icon get a red cross through it?Can you ping 192.168.0.1?
don't know haven't tried but no doublt will have the opertunity in the very near future.Have you set your wireless to autoconnect to your ssid when in range, and to only connect to infrastructure networks?
i would not know how to do this
as above, but drop out usually oocurs when there is no activity on the connection. for example, if you load a webpage, read the content of the webpage, then click a link, theres a good chance it has dropped.Or, are you having problems surfing, so try the repair.
if you are downloading a file it will usually be fine, even for a large file it might take 2 or 3 hours with no problems. as soon as you go back to intermitant use of the connection it drops out. - not sure if thats very clear, will try to explain again if needs be.
thanks. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

i take this back, it has beend crap this morning, worked fine all last night though. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
yes, xp.
have scanned for other networks. There are two. one on channel 11 and one on 6. so have changed my channel to 1.
where can i check if connection is encryped?
power saving should be off - it was when i used the software that came with the adapter to monitor the connection. i certainly have not switched it on.
have done all that. only one i had to change was the Access point (Infrastrucure) option.
something i have forgotten to mention so far is that i have two pcs connected wirelessly and the they both encounter the same problem at the same time about 95% of the time. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
p.s. the two other networks are not always detectable, sometimes only one of them is there, sometimes neither. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0
