  • Can anyone explain to me why having upgraded the Ram with another 256mb stick, whilst my total physical memory is 512mb, my available is 228mb? This is immediately after login with no programmes running

I assume you're running Windows XP, in which case straight after startup you actually have lots of programs running - Windows takes up about 200Mb of memory just on its own, then there's usually virus checking software, printer drivers, etc. Take a look at the Processes tab when you open Task Manager (by right clicking in the task bar at the bottom of your screen).

Most Windows machines will use up around 256Mb of memory just when they are doing nothing.

    Cheers

Scrooge, how much RAM does it say you have when you first turn the lappy on, before it boots windows? Once windows has loaded, go into System and check how much ram it says you've got. It should tell you under the "General" tab. It should say 448Mbs (64MBs is used on the shared graphics)

  • it says 448mb which i guess is good news.

I ran a file transfer thingy from my PC to transfer some of my software via a cross-over cable so I guess it must of dragged a load of memory draining rubbish along with it.

Tojo, I think the ram is only available in store for that price. I bought mine when I went to pick my laptop up - there was a huge sign over the display stating that it was half price.

Thanks..... ;) ..... I'll take a run over to PC World tomorrow and have a look. :)

  • Had fun tonight - my laptop wouldn't even boot up! Ended up having to do a Packard Bell restore. :( Working fine now, but back to taking crap off. AOL's uninstalled, firefox is on, my wireless network is back up and running, but norton's internet security is peeing me off. Uninstalled the PB toolbar (uninstall is in the dynamic toolbar folder)
