I don't know much about this sort of thing but would like one to record xmas films... does this DVD recorder record onto discs, or a hard drive, or both?
If it records on to a hard drive, does it eventually delete unseen films, do you have to record onto disc within a set time?
And can you plug this into a ntl box and record any channel while watching another?
Sorry for all the Q's, but like i say, novice DVd recoreder buyer here!!
    Thank you

I also saw this & was going to post it until I noticed it only recorded onto the inferior + discs & didn't have a freeview tuner. (at this price it probably wouldn't have a freeview tuner but I expect it is made in China or Korea so I don't see why not). I wouldn't buy any DVD or PVR without freeview now.
    Nice to save.

But how many freeview PVR's in this price range actually have a MPEG2 encoder that can record from external sources, um none that I know of? I'd advise people buy this for recording off your Sky\NTL boxes and buy a seperate freeview PVR.

Anybody remember when video recorders used to cost £500 !!!!

Well all DVD recorders will record from an external source & the better ones will record on to the - (minus) system thus giving a better chance of compatability with other DVD players/ recorders.

"Anybody remember when video recorders used to cost £500 !!!!"

But they were quality makes...Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer etc, with the reliability that goes with them, not cheap Chinese makes.

  • Please note that this is a bargain because you have both HDD (Hard Disc Drive) and the disc writing feature. Products like the Aldi one for £100 do not have disc writers. This means that you cannot put a saved recording onto a disc for saving or to play on another machine.

I have owned several products which use the Plus format (DVD+R and DVD+RW) discs and have not found this to be problematic or bad quality. I would definitely not be put off by that.

Remember folks this is the lowest price budget machine with Hard Drive and Disc Writing... unless someone knows of a better deal. For this money it seems a real bargain.

My final note is that I've had 10 DVD Recorders, all of which have broken down - leading brand names and more obscure ones. Being able to back up recordings onto a disc is important in my opinion if you want to prevent all your recordings being lost if your recorder also malfunctioned and erased data.

    Cheers, Wilf.

Sorry, slightly off topic, but are you going to make this your eleventh then Wilf?

Yes all DVD recorders will record from an external source but there aren't many(any?) equipped with a HDD in this price range that can do the same. Also the no. 1 question on the threads about other pvr's is always "can this record from a Sky\NTL box?" which the inevitable answer is no as they are freeview only. But as this is analogue and already equiped with a MPEG2 encoder for the DVD and therefore it can.

As for the + or - discussion I'd ideally prefer both formats to be supported for greater flexibility. However I've never found any issues with + disks and compatibility and this is quite cheap.
