Missing VIRGIN set top Box

I was refurbishing my flat recently and accidentally sent my set top box off to Oxfam in a box with other items that was was meant for recycling.
I have been told that Virgin will charge me around £250 for a replacement box if I tell them i do not have it anymore. Is this true? Also are there any alternatives, eg 2nd hand?
Thanks

Yes it is, though the price seems to vary. 2nd hand boxes will have a different serial no. The box remains Virgin's property and has to be returned at the end of your contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop

See if Oxfam still have it?0

I have two V+ boxes and about three normal ones, they say they'll collect them but never have as yet. Don't imagine they are any more on the ball now than they were then. They organise a time and everything and you wait in and nobody comes.
Then again you have no box at all, where are you based?0 -
Box collections are done by outside agencies (ie,debt collectors as a sideline) it used to be done inhouse when I was an Engineer with VM,but not know.Analogue they're not collecting anymore but keep hold of them, they'll get round to it.0

Thanks for the offer of the box, but are you sure they wouldn't come to pick it up?
I am based in North London but work Central London so could meet you to pick one up?0 -

This wouldn't be a good idea anyway.
They have the serial number of the box you are meant to have. They will have the serial number of the other box if you hand that in and be able to trace it back to the orginal owner who will then be in trouble too.0 -
If you are using and paying your sub to virgin then just get a second hand box from someone, they are more interested in people that are using dodgy box's than to worry about a legit customer.
Yeah in theory they could want it back, I'm still holding an analogue box they said they would collect 8 years ago.

We had a unused box that was in our garage for years and out of the blue they contacted us to come and collect it.0

Well, probably not a good idea to accept a 2nd hand one then, for my and Jockosjungle's sake!
This puts me in a bit of a quandry - perhaps I should just be honest and hope they dont charge me the full whack....0
