How I saved on hotels in London

I have just spent 3 nights in London and I saved £100 by rebooking my room.
I booked my hotel in November 2009 for a 3 night stay in the 4 star Royal Grande on Hyde Park, this hotel is part of the Shaftsbury Hotels chain. When I booked this in November I was quoted £376 including taxes and breakfast for myself and my wife for 3 nights.
I was curious as to how much it would have cost if I had booked 3 days before my arrival at the hotel, I found that the hotel was in fact £100 cheaper than my original booking, so I checked my original booking and read the cancellation policy and it said as long as I cancel more than 24 hours before arrival there would be no penalties, so I went back on to their site to book the room at the cheaper rate, then cancelled my original booking, I made sure that I got a copy of the cancellation email and took it with me so I had proof.
On arrival and was checking in, I paid the new rate that I booked which was £275.50, this saving paid for our weekend drinks and travelcards:j
