Not much. I've been looking at it seriously again since they brought out the 64GB which would just about do, but still the lack of memory expansion capability puts me off. Although the higher resolution screens on some newer products (Nexus One for example) are starting to tempt too.

You can expect to see a 128 GB version this year.

The touch has a poor low-res screen by today's standards, plus it's locked-down crippled proprietary etc..

    How is it locked-down?

And for that matter, seeing as you can do more with an iPod Touch than just about any other DAP, how is it crippled?

I really dont understand the need to have an all singing all dancing PMP when any modern £100+ phones are able to carry all the same things out just as well (bar music and video).

My phone does everything i need apart from playing music well. So what do i do? buy an ipod touch and suffer the appalling quality of what is essentially its primary use? Ha i think not walkman x series it is for me, it does what its meant to, play music and video, extremely well (ive not heard anything improve mp3 quality so well, i struggle to tell the difference between x series mp3 playback and FLAC on another player).

When i see the touch i just think of that saying, jack of all trades, master at none. I love Apple dearly but Ipods are a skidmark on there otherwise clean underwear. In my head, it would be like shipping a shiny new macbook pro with windows only:eek: beautiful to look at but otherwise average at best.

    Depends who the user is.

My daughter is ten and loves hers. Her DS Lite is on it's last legs but now she can play games on her iPod Touch, she can listen to music, get on the internet when the PC is in use, it's an alarm clock in the morning and now she's bought a mic for it she can use it to tune her guitar.

Some of those things she can do on her phone but I'm certainly not buying her a smartphone capable of all that.

If all she had wanted was something to play music I'd have got her a Sansa Fuze as they have excellent sound quality and are a lot cheaper but for her the iPod is perfect.

And it's my problem if I have no friends

since jailbreaking mine, i have found it a lot better because of things like themes, background apps and the SSH access which allows me to upload stuff to the touch manually.

Jailbreaking has its own problems though.

I hope you remembered to change your default SSH password. ;)

Isn't that his point though Marty? If it wasn't 'locked down' and Apple supported a more open version akin to the jailbroken versions, how much better could it be?
There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.

Snap - I have an X for audio and video and a phone for anything else. I wouldn't want to watch video on a DAP screen if it wasn't OLED/AMOLED.

i haven't yet, but i'm the type of person that turns services off when i don't need them.

And its rarely connected to any public networks so i should be fairly safe from attacks.

Well, then we'd have iPod Touch viruses to content with.

I appreciate the point, but with over 100,000 apps available (and a projected 300,000 by the end of the year), I think it's a bit much for anyone to take Apple to task for what you can do with an iPod Touch.

It maybe be a walled garden, but it's a bloody big one.

could do all that on a netbook

do people really & truly use the internet on ipod touches, iphones etc?

i note that youve said she uses it to get on the internet 'when the PC is in use' which means its not the usual way of getting access

& how many of those apps are duplicates, & advertising/promo items from big business, & fart apps etc etc etc

the OP needs to decide what is the priority:
playing music or using the internet
