We're always looking for ways to make MoneySaving easier, so we'd like to build some handy apps for web browsers and mobiles. Yet with so much content, and so many tools and calculators on the site, deciding what to build is tough!
Thus, this week we want your ideas for MSE apps, based on absolutely anything on the site. You needn't be a techie to join in, just tell us what'd be most useful to you, and who knows, we might build it!
Champagne for the best suggestions!
If we use your suggestion we'll send you a bottle of bubbly for your troubles. If lots of people suggest the same thing it'll be first come first served.
The main tools and calculators are listed below, but they're only there for inspiration; don't feel restricted by them. Ideas based on guides or forum sections are just as welcome, if not even more so.

Main Tools & Calculators:
- Tunechecker.com
- Premium Bonds Calculator
- The Demotivator (we are already building one based on this)
- FlightChecker
- Travel Money Maximiser
- Budget Planner
- Bank Charges Calculator
- Cashback-Sites Maximiser
- UK CallChecker
- International CallChecker
- LoyaltyChecker
- Minimum Repayment Calculator
- Stoozing Calculator
- RewardsChecker
- Tart Alert
Remember this is about ideas for apps to use EXISTING MSE content and tools - not new content
Please also consider why someone should use it on their mobile - e.g. while we thought of a voucher app - you can't print them off on mobiles so it's not so worthwhile
An easy format to reply in...
Please tell us
What the app is
What MSE content it'll use
Why do you think it's good for a mobile phone/web plug-in

What about an app that tells you what the money you're about to spend is really worth to you, given your mortgage? I read that if you have a mortgage, you shouldn't consider that you're spending the face value price of anything (e.g. £2.00 for a cup of coffee) but should consider how much you've lost on top by not paying off your mortgage debt. For example, if you have a £100,000 mortgage but it will cost £175,000 to pay it off over its term including both capital and interest, then every £1 you spend is really £1.75; so your £2 coffee is really costing you £3.50 (still want it?!!). Could one of the MSE interest-calculating tools be adapted for this? It's sort of another version of the demotivator but with a slightly different philosophy.
The original brief article is here.0 -
what about a simple spending diary app for a mobile phone? it's much easier to have that then write in a seperate notebook or forget to add it online/on paper when you get home.
[threadbanner]box[/threadbanner]r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
I've two ideas
1) a uk version of the barcode checker. The iPhone app doesn't really work in England.
2) as an avid reader I'd like to find free/ cheap audio books- for some reason books on iTunes are really expensive. Or something like 'book butler' where u can check fir the cheapest book price.0 -
How about an app that measures your carbon footprint.Knowledge is power :wave:0

I'd love to have a shop bot for my mobile phone. It'd be great for when I'm in a shop & wondering whether to buy something (or not! )
Would it be really expensive to have access to bar-code info to make it simple? Either way it would be a great service.0 -
i think it would be great to have a general money saving app. when you log on to it you would have a menu for every day things i.e petrol, clothes, food (things that people purchase often). Once you have gone on to a menu you have quick tips from the website on how to save money on each subject. So for example you click on food or grocery's and it would tell you all the new tips on how to save money on food. It would be great to have on your mobile so when your out and your need petrol you could go on the app and see the best way to save money.
It would also be great to have a 'bank account app' on this app you would be able to put in each month how much money you have got coming in to your bank account, you can enter information on how much you need to pay out on bills etc and it would then work out how much money you have left to spend each week and overall for that month. As it would be an app on your mobile as you spend money you could type it into your app and it would show you how much money you have left to spend.
This would be great as although you can keep track on money in your head you could often forget the little spends which you sometimes miss out and if your not great at maths it is hard to keep track of all your spends! i know you can access this information via online banking but if you are out for a day you dont always have access to your internet to check your bank and purchases dont always show up straight away. At least if you have it all saved in a app on your phone it is easy for you to access!
i know an app like this would help me out loads! and it would also make budgeting alot easier as you would always have access to how much money you have spent and have left!!0 -
How about an app for helping you give up smoking by encouraging you and telling you how much you have saved so far,or by encouraging you to loose weight and telling you how much you have lost and how long you have to go to hit your target weight.
Im not really clued up about Apps so i hope my suggestion is not ridiculous.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -
Not sure whether copy right issues come into it but a hot deals app would be really good split between online and offline. Therefore if you are out an about you could check various categoies to see if there are any current deals that you could take advantage of, rather than getting home and seeing what you missed!
The grabbit forum is ok but good deals can be lost down the pages if there is no one updating them.
should i come and get it now?0 -
How about an app that interfaces with your Bank/Credit card account so when you are out shopping you get real time alerts on your balance and warning when you get too close to your credit limit or a pre-defined current account buffer?
This way you get remiders and make you think twice about spending what you havent got thus reducing bank charges.
This could be achieved using XML feeds from a web service and not having to store huge amounts of data on a mobile device, it could be a popular tool with the banks and money savers.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0
