Roof replacement

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but it semed the right place.
Our roof needs replacing. Its currently an original council job from the 50's, and is now starting to leak.
The insurance company have washed their hands of the whole thing, even though the leak started after some bad weather, and have quoted 'long standing damage and wear'.:mad:
What I need now is a reliable, reasonable roofing company, but who offer finance or credit, otherwise Im going to have to try for a loan, and as a student I dont think Im going to have much luck.
I dont even know how much were looking at. We did get 1 quote for £2,300 but that was a while back before the trouble started.
Thankyou in advance for anyone who has any advice.

i doubt you will need a 1950s roof replacing. a repair is probably all that is required.

Sorry. Im in liverpool.
Apparently, all the ridge tiles are cracked, (or whatever the tiles along the top edge of the roof are called) so water is running down inside the tiles along the felt. I think the spars have become wet over time, and there are a couple of patches of mold type stuff dotted around the inside of the roof, although I must admit to having essentially no idea what im talking about0 -
I must admit our ridge tiles could do with replacing both at the top and two sides that form the side of the house. the cement has come off in many places, ridges tiles crack and numerous roofing tiles need replacing. we replaced some that were easily to get near guttering
I didnt expect it to be around 9-10k though, I was thinking it might be 2-3k, maybe 4k tops

Why should it be 10k - you need a repair NOT a TOTAL replacement. Unlikely you need a new roof.
Repoint ridges, repair or replace up to 30 tiles for about £500 tops.0 -
I was speaking to a friend yesterday who raised 2 very good points, but I dont know whether it will get me anywhere or not.
Firstly, how can the surveyor know without doubt that the damage is longstanding, if noone ever did a PRE insurance policy survey?
He mentioned the ripped felt as a factor, but I ripped the felt to access the tiles to stop the leak temporarily.
How could I, having no knowledge of the condition of the roof as I have no knowledge, have known what I should and shouldnt do?
Secondly, can the insurance company reasonably refuse any assistance, including repairing an active leak, based on the findings of the surveyor.
At the end of the day, it was the insurance company who suggested storm damage, I only rang to report a leak...0 -
it wont take a genius to realise if the damage is storm or wear/tear related.
(in most cases).Get some gorm.0
