MissG The hardest things for me to give up were smoking and I did that with no help, nothing (went cold turkey) and it has been 3 years now. I also gave up coke, as in coca cola (cold turkey). I gave up smoking at a hard and very low time in my life when I was very depressed and I gave up coke about 6 months later. I don't now how I did it but I did it, I had no reason to give up I just wanted to give up. Smoking did disgust me towards the end and I did go away on holiday which smoking when away I found so horrible as the heat makes it taste so different and so horrible, I suppose that did help me in a way. I can't remember withdrawal with smoking as much but I can with the coke, you would have thought it would be the other way round.
I had no reason like debt or anything to give these up so sorry if I got it wrong
I forgot to mention this in my original post
MissG Every now and then I miss the habit of lighting up etc but I would never go back on them. I would not say I MISS them at all but just the actions if you know what I mean

K9cuddles Strangely enough I miss Petrol!!! I used to go on loads of lil road trips with the bf... now I can't even afford the round 90 mile drive to see him. I've cut back on Takeaways really well (used to have them Saturday AND Sunday!!).. so now I'm eatting healthlier, and excercising more.. I've switched from normal Cola to Diet... so now I just need to give up that!!! I don't smoke or drink (hence I felt the need to waste money on another stuff as a reward!) .. I keep saying to the bf.. this time next year I'll be skinny and loaded!! lol

I had a rather unhealthy ( in every sense) addiction to Diet Coke. Can for brekkie, cans at work, 2 litre bottle at home every night. Costing ( including the offers and the bogofs) over 4 quid most days. Totalled it up and for the year ( including days off not drinking it) I spent somehwere in the region of 750 quid a year. Needless to say, that was the first and only thing to "give up", everything else Ive reduced use of or got for cheaper/free.
I had one the other day for my "treat" and wound up with the worlds most killer headache, making me very sick indeed. Coincidence?

MissG That's what i was like i went through a couple of litres a day. I would hate to work out or even just look at the money i spent on
You have done well to get off it as i know how hard it can be

lynzpower Saves even more money when your not forver in the shop buying it cos you cant see what else there is to spend on. The headche was a killer and im so pleased I stopped it!

sparkle_monkey Miss G & Lynzpower - DIET COKE - ahhh, I know totally what you mean, I've drunk a litre already today. Going to drink the last one tomorrow and then try to quit it. I find it scary that for me it seems more addictive than smoking! I rarely crave a fag now but diet coke is in my dreams. I wonder what's in that stuff, I find myself totally craving coke and then making myself sick by drinking so much, (plus getting fat with all the chocolate that goes with it!)

ps. I would add that last week I spent £7 on the dreaded diet C & chocolate - that's almost half my food budget for the week! What a waste of money.

MissG The addiction is the caffeine just the same as tea or coffee. I never thought when I submitted my reply that so many people have been or are addicted to coke.
I always remember a man who seen me drinking coke say, "You shouldn't drink coke as it rots your insides" at the same time he lifted his t-shirt up and he had a massive scar from an operation he had to have through drinking JUST coke.

K9cuddles MissG.. your kiddin???
I've had people at work ask me how I sleep at night with all the coke I drink!!
In response to K9cuddles
MissG I was shocked when he showed me!!
If you think about it the more you drink the more your body is tolerant to it so it won't effect sleep etc as much, you then need / want more for it to have some effect but then your body becomes tolerant to that amount so you then need more and on you go.
I never realised how much coke i drunk until i sat down and actually thought about it, even when people asked me how could i sleep at night i didn't realise the amount i drunk.

lynzpower Serious. My sister is a bit mad with money, and she goes for regular colonic irrigation at 60 quid a go. At her first one, her therapist ( or whatever they are called) showed her this pure black goo, and she said, without prompting, dont suppose you drink a lot of diet coke do you? My sis goes "how did you know that" she said, "thats what this black tar likke goo is, I see a lot of it, in people that drink a lot of diet coke". Wondered whether to post this earlier or is it too much info? Sod it, we all need to know what we are putting in our bodies, apparently this goo is all the stuff in it your body cant process and sits in your colon. Hasnt put her off though, for me it just makes me even more chuffed Ive given it up

MissG It's shocking to think what it does to you. Sorry if it's a bit too much info but if I was ill and was sick when I drank coke it would be black
What's quite shocking is to think how many young growing children drink coke, it's available to anybody who is old enough to reach up and get it out the fridge and buy it or even just ask for it.
We should start a coke awareness campaign on mse

I miss KFC and McDonalds. Got a confession. bought loads of fresh foods which were suitable for casseroles and meals made from scratch etc etc. I'm sure it will save a fortune in the long run!! Anyway...when i got home i was so tired (after rooting around for the best bargains) that i couldn't be bothered cooking so i went to KFC and had a Fillet Tower Meal. It was heaven. I won't miss coke though after reading the other posts.
Am I forgiven??

Alicatt I had a Diet Coke addiction too - took me 3 attempts to finally get off the stuff (though still have the occasional can - but only about 1 a month - think I'll dump it all together after reading about the black goo!! ). I only drank 1 can, occasionally 2, a day but I found that absolutely nothing else satisfied my thirst first thing in the morning - it finally dawned on me that it couldn't be a 'true' thirst as water didn't even touch it!! Couldn't go straight to water - had to have weak diluting juice first for a few weeks (it was obviously the sugar/sugar substitutes my body craved!) and now I just love drinking water and find Diet Coke a bit too sweet! :T
It's quite frightening how many people have this Diet Coke problem!

MissG I always thought diet coke was sugar free, i may be wrong. By the way mine was normal coke.

I'm a total cola addict, go through at least 2 x 2-Litre bottles a day :$
I know it's bad but I can't help itI did make it money saving cola buy buying Tesco own brand (not value) and adding my own lemon juice in instead of buying premium lemon flavour coke.

I am a coke addict too. Used to love the real thing but it played havoc with my stomach. I switched to Diet Coke a few years ago but the beginning of last year i discovered the joys of Pepsi Max. I go through gallons of it and this morning it was the first thing i thought about so i went out and bought some. Sometimes if i don't have for a couple of days i get a headache. I gave up smoking at the beginning of the year for a month and found that i didn't crave pepsi, i all of a sudden realised that i hadn't had it for 2 weeks and never thought about it. Its amazing how an addiction can go hand in hand with another.A banker is someone who lends you an umbrella when the sun is shining, and who asks for it back when it start to rain.0

I was averaging 1-1.5 litres of normal coke a day (800 calories just in my drinks!!!).. I've now switched to Diet and try not to have more then 1 litre aday... I don't drink any hot drinks, milk or squashes and find alternatives a real bind!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Some well known facts about coke.....

I really appreciate this thread. It sounds awful to say that you're addicted to a drink, but at least I know that I'm not the only one.
I've given it up (along with chocolate) for Lent and I'm missing it more than chocolate. How bizarre is that? I know it's not good for me, but it's so addictive. It must be all that sugar in it. I try to swap it for another fizzy drink (eg low sugar lemonade) or water, but they don't have nearly the same effect. I must be mad.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -

The addiction is caffeine just like in tea and coffee.
