mmm seeing as sterilising tablets are basically bleach I expect diluted thin bleach (not Domestos-style thick bleach) would do the same thing. Logical really.student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0

No really, they are.
The active ingredient in sterilising tablets is di-Chloroisocyanurate acid (Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate, NaDCC). (Yes I did have to copy and paste that name). When dissolved in water this creates a chlorine solution and when used to clean baby bottles is at very low concentrations (about 250 parts per million (ppm) chlorine).
Thin Bleach is just a solution of Sodium Hypochlorite in water (usually about 4% free chlorine, 40000ppm, at time of manufacture). So if you put 5ml (1 teaspoonful) of thin bleach in 1 litre of water, you will get a solution of approximately 200ppm.
Solutions of bleach of this sort of concentration are often used to sanitise dishes, utensils and work surfaces in commercial kitchens (after normal cleaning and rinsing).
I'm not recommending you use bleach to sterilise baby bottles (for a start it's a lot easier to get the dose right using solid tablets), but just saying that as the active ingredient is the same in both these tablets and thin bleach you could use very dilute bleach to remove stains from plasticware - just make sure they are well rinsed afterwards.
I found this page about commercial sterilising tablets (the same substance as the ones you buy for baby bottles just bigger tablets) which details some pretty amazing uses for chlorine.student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
Hi,
I have noticed that after freezing chilis, spag bol etc, the storage containers are marked with the colour of the sauce and doesn't easily come off.
Is there any easy way to clean these?
Thanks in advance.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0
